[edit]Georgios Balatsinos, born in Athens 05.08.1983 (Greek: [ʝɔɾɣɔs bɐlɐt͡siˈnɔs] ⓘ;is a Greek - Swiss conductor and composer.
Biography
[edit]Early life
[edit]At age of 6 he studied violin and piano at "Children and Music" club in Corfu and later at Ionian conservatory from which he graduated in viola and advanced theory classes. At age 13 he attended private composition lessons with Ch. Xanthoudakis and later with I. Papadatos. Around the age of 16, he was distinguished with the 1st prize in the Panhellenic Music Competition of the Ministry of Education in the string category as well as in the composition category with his String Trio op.4 which was played by musicians from Athens State Orchestra. At 17 he went to Germany to learn and master his instrument in Detmold. Further studies on viola and composition are added.[1].
In 2001 he was accepted to Hochschule für Musik Detmold in Germany and later to Conservatoire de musique de Genève studied viola with Nobuko Imai and composition with Michael Jarrell. In 2003-2006 period, became the youngest member of Sinfonieorchester Basel[2] and after, collaborated with Orquestra do Norte and Cascais & Oeiras Chamber Orchestra in Portugal, as solo viola.
Decisions fulfillment regarding conducting, finds him at the "Hochschule Luzern – Musik" from 2010 to 2012, where he studied with professor Ralf Weikert, at "Concervatorio di Milano" with professor Vittorio Parisi from 2012 to 2014 and at "Accademia Musicale Chigiana" along 2010-2014 summer courses with the late Gianluigi Gelmetti.
Career
[edit]As an active student he took part at numerous international master classes with David Zinman, Péter Eötvös, Gennady Rozhdestvensky, Michail Jurowski, Neeme Järvi. He was also a finalist of the 15th Conductor workshop “Interaction” of the Critical Orchestra Berlin with leading musicians from Berliner Philharmoniker, Staatskapelle Berlin and Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden.
Balatsinos appointed, since 2010, artistic director[3] of Jugendsinfonieorchester Arabesque
In January 2015 he was among the 4 top conductors (out of the 130 applicants) selected by International conductor David Zinman who lead a workshop for young conductors at the National Arts Centre Orchestra.[4] [5]
He won the International Concert Competition “Debut Berlin” (Conducting, 2016) and received the 1st prize at the International Conducting Competition “Black Sea” (Romania, 2012). Moreover, he was one of the three finalists at the internationalworkshop Interaktion of Kritisches Orchester (Berlin, 2017).[6]
In 2022, Balatsinos was named for two years as Chief Conductor[7] of Sorbisches National Ensemble Musiktheater.
Since 2024, he is Permanent Conductor[8] of the historical Wrocław Opera.
