DADD3000

This project targets enrichment and quality increase of Arabic Wikipedia Content by launching a competition with prices/awards and by teaching how to edit in Wikipedia and which requirements are needed to assure acceptance and quality. The targeted new articles (created or developed) is 3000 Wikipedia articles.

Project Goal

Project Plan

After achieving the targets of 2016 and 2017 by adding/developing more than 3000 articles The program starts from January 2018 until December 2018 with a 60 days periodic competition. Every 30 days an initial evaluation is done and notes about the articles are published, to give participant the chance to make necessary corrections and to improve articles before the periodic deadline of 60 days ends.

6. Sixth compition: November & December

results of each competition will be archived and possible enhancements will be applied in every next part. The evaluation is done considering major acceptance requirements and many other additional factors. An overview of the concept is given (in Arabic) here!

Activities

1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?

Yes, the training is done in different scales:

1. videos
   1. by sharing already created videos on creating and editing of wiki articles
   2. by sharing already created videos explaing important wiki tools like PetScan for querying
2. Social Media: participants are also helped using a facebook teaching group beside Wikipedia pages (will be created by Feb,05,2018)

2. How will you let your community know about the event? Please paste links below to where relevant communities have been notified of your proposal, and to any other relevant community discussions.

1. Our community knows well about the initiative since its begin in late 2015 and it has used the vidoes created and articles gathered for translatio into arwiki. There is an internal arwiki page talks about the initiative and presenting its services. A member of the initiative has also been invited to give a presentation about Wikimedia/Wikipedia & the initiative by the treasurer of Wikimedians of the Levant User Group, and the representative in Palestine, User:Fjmustak (link1, link2, link3 and link4).
2. Articles provided by the initiative has been used in several educational programs in the middle east (basically in Palestine and Jordan).

3. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead the event?

Yes, our team includes some well experienced editors beside me (Usernames: Sky xe, Muhammad Abul-Futooh, Fatma elzahraa2, Marwa Ahmed Atia and Mohammad Hijjawi). One of them has the experience of leading the wiki educational program in Nablus-Palestine (Mohammad Hijjawi) and other like Fatma elzahraa2 has been mentioned in the Wikimedia blog for their activity and articles quality (link). While the member Muhammad Abul-Futooh is one of the most active Wikipedians on arwiki, wikidata and less on enwiki, I (Sky xe) was active in involving the community by leading the DADD-INITIATIVE and by gathering almost 300k articles and classifying them on a webpage (arabicwiki.org) to help editors find articles matching their interest in an easy way. The articles have been all sorted based on the PagePile value in the beginning of 2018, to assure that most visited articles are listed first.

4. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?

Many participants have gained good editing experience and might participate easily. For new editors we build up them up step by step using:

1. self-created short, medium and high detailed videos
2. using a complex evaluation approach to judge the articles score
3. by publishing our notices on the articles and pointing all major mistakes and assure their avoidance in comming sessions.
4. encouragement in the evaluation process by being less strict and by fixing some issues in their articles which might be difficult for them to solve
5. encouraging experience editors to teach new editors by giving them additional scores in the evaluation

5. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?

1. by publishig their good work in community pages in form of posts or videos

6. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?

This support is thought to keep the successful DADD-initiative going and to release it from carrying all the costs alone. The project will help to add new and improve poor important content of the Arabic Wikipedia. The collections of categorized enwiki articles (approx: 300 Thousand) which are missing in arwiki helps many new editors to find suitable articles to start to write into Arabic. Also thousands of poor articles have been collected to help mainatain articles that needs it necessarily (e.g.: articles without references, stub articles, auto-translation, etc.). All these articles are grouped and shown on the initiative webpage.

2. sending fees:
   1. 30$ to 50$ depending on the country the winners live in. In average: $40.
3. due to the grant limit of $2000, we apply to partially cover the total costs ($3870 = 6 x ($605 + $40)).
