Objective of Tumaini University
[edit]- Preserve, transmit, and enhance a broad base of knowledge for the benefit of its students.
- Empower students to develop their fundamental capabilities, assist them to think critically, and enable them to be skilful in communication and methods of inquiry.
- Create a sense of public responsibility in the students.
- Promote respect for learning, pursuit of truth, and mature thinking about the ultimate meaning of life.
- Encourage perspectives and Christian moral values that embody a sense of vocation, deep concern for human betterment, obligation of service to others, equality among persons, loyalty to the truth, and responsible citizenship. Educational Philosophy
[edit]Tumaini University, Iringa University College is dedicated to liberal and professional education and to the belief that the full achievement of a student’s potential is directly related to the openness, the breadth, and the depth of his or her university experience. The University’s educational programmes are structured to recognize that each student is an individual, and to enable each individual to benefit fully from the opportunities it affords. The University is open to all persons, regardless of race, creed, color, gender, or political opinion. Tumaini University has educational programmes that are governed by five basic principles: The University is an educational institution dedicated to community service by providing opportunities and the environment for acquisition of knowledge, wisdom, and inspiration to future generations in all walks of life. The University is committed to providing faculty, facilities, and support, appropriate to a university of the highest standing, for research leading to a systematic and relentless quest for knowledge, and the organization of knowledge. The University is committed to providing faculty, facilities, and support for the teaching of undergraduate and post graduate students, inculcating, imparting, and propagating information produced through research, and providing for the acquisition of both liberal and professional education responsive to the needs of East Africa and other parts of the world. The University is committed to providing support for faculty service through professional publications, extension programmes, and consultation including the rendering of professional advice to government, industry, public institutions and private organizations and non-profit organizations. History
[edit]Tumaini University Iringa Lutheran College and Seminary- the forerunner of the Tumaini University, Iringa University College was founded in Iringa in 1994. Lectures in Theology at the Diploma level were held from 1994 while degree programmes in business administration and Journalism were held from 1995. In 1997, Iringa Lutheran College and Seminary changed its original name, becoming Tumaini University, Iringa University College. The construction of the new Campus buildings was made largely through generous donations of finances, efforts and involvement from various parties that include; ELCA-St. Paul Area synod and individuals in USA, Finnish Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bavaria, Germany, congregants from ELCT Iringa Diocese, ELCT Southern zone Diocese and the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania. In the year 2011/2012, Tumaini University, Iringa University College boots an enrollment of about 4,500 students who represent largely all Tanzanian society and others are from the EAC, SADC, USA Germany and Finland. The University has highly trained and experienced academic staff from Tanzania and other countries across the globe.
