We've heard bits of news about en-wiki dumps and the development of better methods for them. What is the situation like for the near future? When can we expect a new dump, and will there be regular dumps any time soon?

Wikimedia has been participating in Google Summer of Code, in which young hackers work with MediaWiki developers to improve or add features. How competitive has it been in terms of the students who want to participate? Has any of that work made its way into live WMF projects?

At this point MediaWiki is being used by a lot of for-profit companies like Wikia and wikiHow who modify the software to suit their needs. How much useful coding from commercial MediaWiki users has made its way back into the main version?
