Speedy deletion nomination of Eyarth[edit]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. This is a notice to inform you that a tag has been placed on Eyarth requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a very short article providing little or no context to the reader. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Boca Juniors Reserves and Academy, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Cristian Chávez (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Your strategy ... is wrong, I'm afraid[edit]

I see that you are following the strategy of taking an article on X, and marking Commons Category:X on all the images that were in the article. This might sometimes help, but it fails badly when an article has various tangential aspects which are illustrated. The logic Y is-aspect-of X and I illustrates Y therefore I belongs to category X is WRONG. For the second time today, please STOP doing this - it is causing a lot of work to UNDO your random guesses! I'm not doing psychology, I'm saying that I've had to do the practical thing of undoing a whole lot of your edits as they were wrong. It looked as if you were making those edits by following the strategy I've outlined above, which would give exactly the observed results. Whatever the reason for your edits of the kind described, I'd be extremely grateful if you stopped. Chiswick Chap (talk) 19:30, 11 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Use of an image doesn't necessarily imply categorisation[edit]

Allforrous, it's plain we don't see eye to eye on some issues; that's fine, there's room for many points of view here.

However, on one specific matter it'd be worth trying to agree. When an image is used in an article, it can be for many reasons.

1) A portrait of John Doe in his article certainly does imply, as it's clear both of us believe, that a potential Category:John Doe would make sense, and might (if there are enough files to put there) be worth creating. I happen to think that number should certainly be larger than 3 before one sets up all that apparatus, but at least I can grant that the category is not utterly illogical.
2) John Doe visits a city, or reads a book, or speaks to an institution, or ... whatever, and the article's editor sees fit to include an image of that city, book, institution or whatever. However, Doe visited many cities, read many books ... the presence of the image is no evidence at all that the Category:John Doe is appropriate for the image of the city, book, etc. It simply doesn't follow.
3) John Doe practices only Ruritanian Yoga which consists entirely of standing on his head in full ceremonial robes, chanting in Sanskrit, accompanied only by men aged over 50 similarly dressed. He writes often about the wickedness of yoga poses practiced by young women wearing skimpy clothing. The article's editor selects at random a photo of a young blonde woman doing a standing yoga pose in skimpy shorts and crop top to support the point, citing a scholar who describes John Doe's opinion. The presence of that particular yoga pose, that particular young woman, and that particular skimpy dress all have precisely nothing to do with the category:John Doe. It is an error to connect the example chosen (it had to be just one) as any of many examples would have done as well: a red-haired woman in a green bikini doing a sitting pose would have been just as valid an example, and in neither case should the image be categorised as anything to do with John Doe.

I do hope this is clear: it isn't safe to assume that the presence of an image in a Wikipedia article, even if well-chosen, apposite, and supported by reliable evidence, is still not proof that a category is required for that image. All the best, Chiswick Chap (talk) 18:20, 20 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Yoga categories on Commons[edit]

Hi, just a note to say I saw your comment, the first thing I've ever heard you say in reply to anything actually, so thank you. I do not however really think it appropriate to discuss Commons matters here on Wikipedia, they are separate Wikis. Further, you have read my comments over there. I'll just say that the matter is quite serious - harm is being done to the structure, and to be honest I wish you'd stop. Chiswick Chap (talk) 14:48, 27 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. You must enter the category to discuss, and raise the changes to the entire community. Wikipedia is my only reference. --Allforrous (talk) 15:09, 27 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
You're causing multiple discussions over two wikis; and editing on a Commons Category Talk page is tantamount to guaranteeing no reply, basically. OK, I'll not reply here again; please don't touch my talk page either on Wikipedia or on Commons, I've seen your remarks, repeatedly. Thanks. Chiswick Chap (talk) 15:54, 27 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Feedback on Vector (2022) conversation[edit]

The slides to our latest Wikimania presentation

Hello! As a member of WikiProject Usability, I wanted to draw your attention to a conversation currently underway on WP:VPR (see the beginning of the discussion) around adopting Vector 2022 as the new default skin.

The Web team at the Wikimedia Foundation has been working on Vector 2022 for the past three years, collaborating with the English Wikipedia community as well as other wikis to ensure that the skin performs better qualitatively and quantitatively for readers and communities than the previous Vector skin. The goal of the new skin is to create a more welcoming and easier to use experience for readers and editors across the wiki. For more details, see our new FAQ.

For the past couple of months, we have collected thoughts from the English Wikipedia community on what changes need to be made to the skin prior to it being considered ready for deployment. Our next step would be to start an RfC to assess whether the community considers Vedtor 2022 ready.

Prior to the beginning of the RfC, we wanted to draw your attention to the current conversation and encourage your feedback on the skin.

Our results from Vector 2022 at a glance
  • The sticky header makes it easier to access tools that editors use often. It decreases scrolling to the top of the page by 16%
  • The new table of contents makes it easier to navigate to different sections. Readers and editors jumped between sections 50% more than with the old table of contents
  • The new search bar is easier to find and makes it easier to find the correct search result from the list. This increased the amount of searches started by 30% on the wikis we tested on
  • The collapsible sidebar allows readers and editors to choose whether they want to see the main menu or not. Our testing shows that this allows people to better focus on their current task - reading with a collapsed menu, or editing with an open menu
  • The language switching menu makes it possible to switch languages without scrolling
  • The user menu collects all user links in a single place, making it easier to understand what each link does. In testing, 71% of surveyed editors reported positive experiences with the new menu

Thank you, OVasileva (WMF), SGrabarczuk (WMF) (talk) 12:27, 25 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
