Small world[edit]

Pretty sure you have a close relationship with a young man described as a "little fella" by Bob Hawke many moons ago. I lived with him (the little fella, not hawke obviously) on Jl. Irian in Menteng in the 1990s (if you email him, tell him i'm "The Bung" and he'll fill you in). No need to mention names here, but if you get involved more in this rather byzantine corner of "knowledge" (note the scare quotes) and need help with some of the ropes, feel free to ping me.Bali ultimate (talk) 05:55, 10 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    • You did it right :) I suggest you use the signature button, it makes it easier than using ~ four times. Where to post comments - the bottom of the talk page, or the relevant section. Of course the activity of a page matters, it always help to post on relevant pages and direct people to the discussion. I am not sure how active WT:INDONESIA is, but I pride myself that the WT:POLAND which I help maintain is quite active, and a good place to discuss Poland-related issues with others. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| talk to me 14:55, 27 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Tidying the list[edit]

Thanks. I am always a bit reluctant to change the work of others. But this list (which I think is a very useful list) is awfully untidy. There are lots of one or two-line entries which, in turn, means that the main list at the top is very, very long. And some of the sub-sub-lists in the main list at the top seem to be getting into rather deailed matters. In the meantime, I hope things are well with you. However, much of the stuff that seems to be superfluous seems to have been posted by Indonesian colleagues and so I am reluctant to touch it. This is an automated message from CorenSearchBot. I have performed a search with the contents of List of Australian Ambassadors to Indonesia, and it appears to be very similar to another Wikipedia page: List of Indonesian Ambassadors to Australia. It is possible that you have accidentally duplicated contents, or made an error while creating the page— you might want to look at the pages and see if that is the case. If you are intentionally trying to rename an article, please see Help:Moving a page for instructions on how to do this without copying and pasting. If you are trying to move or copy content from one article to a different one, please see Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia and be sure you have acknowledged the duplication of material in an edit summary to preserve attribution history.

It is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article. CorenSearchBot (talk) 00:11, 21 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  • The bot is technically correct but should be ignored on this occasion. This table was originally planned to be listed on the "List of Indonesian Ambassadors to Australia" page (which was planned to be renamed). However, it seems best to have a separate page (because this approach is consistent with overall practice on Wikipedia for dozens of other similar pages). So while the bot is technically correct, this is not an error. This current approach seems best.

Thanks Peter for creating this page. Also, for Bill Morrison, I only altered the link, not the name--this just means that the page will link directly to Bill Morrison (Australian politician), without a redirect, but it still says William Morrison on the page. Hi[edit]

Hi, I know you are active at Indonesia project. There was a list of Indonesia related quality articles, in which there was also list of Indonesia related articles appeared in "did you know" section on main page. If you see main page currently, there is article Alcohol in Indonesia is appeared on main page in DYK section. I want to add it in that list of quality articles of Indonesia. Do you know that list? I am not finding that list currently. --Human3015TALK  02:00, 22 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • Thanks. I'd like to help but I'm not familiar with this. I have not seen the list of quality articles for Indonesia. The main list I work with for Indonesia (which I guess you know" is the "List of Indonesian-related topics." But I don't know the list of quality articles that you mention. Pmccawley (talk)
Anyway, I have seen it somewhere, I will search for it, if I find it then I will tell you. If you are interested you can maintain that list too. Thanks. --Human3015TALK  02:13, 22 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • Thanks. Good to have feedback. There is a lot that needs cleaning up. Unfortunately, time is limited. Still, we need to try to make improvements when we can. In the use of titles in Indonesia, my preferred aim is to try to be educational. While we should not take the titles too seriously, of course, it is also true that they are part of culture. So we should try to explain a little of the culture as we go along. It would be nice if readers who know little about Indonesia at least get a feel for the culture. That, at least, is my aim. • Yes, I agree. I suppose the relative lack of attention to the Central Javanese court stuff doesn't matter all that much since not many people follow this sort of thing. Still, the events are interesting in their own way. Certainly the goings-on are watched in some elite circles in Indonesia, particularly (of course) in Yogya and Solo. It's also notable that the elite from Jakarta still often turn up for coronations, marriages, and so on, in Yogya and Solo. For all his blusukan stuff, Jokowi still keeps his eye on the Susuhunan in Solo! Pmccawley (talk) 01:43, 18 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

beware - a large number of https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=List_of_Indonesia-related_topics are linked to items that have nothing to do with Indonesia = whoever created a lot of these entries did not realise that 'wish lists' can tie into dismbiguation issues - like most of the comedian entries for instance - there may have been a person in Indonesia with that name - but there is no article about them - and it is very deceptive as they look like blue links but if they were created properly - they would be red links... sigh... Thanks re. date vandal[edit]

Hi Pmccawley, just wanted to say thanks for fixing the dates in the Boediono article. That person has been vandalizing dates in thousands of articles, see Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/2001:E68:540E:6C84:B039:7333:ECD0:B8FC/Archive. The admins try to block them, but they change their IP addresses so much that it's difficult. I've been helping to clean it up, and noticed your edits - keep up the good work! --IamNotU (talk) 17:28, 10 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

  • Thank you. Yes, I have noticed a number of attempts by this person to change the data of Boediono's birth. And it's not just Boediono. This person has attacked the pages of a number of other well-known Indonesians. The usual mode of attack is to change the date of birth by one year. It's quite odd. Thanks for the reference you have provided. We'll just have to keep trying to combat this vandalism. Pmccawley (talk) 21:45, 10 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Useful information about Wiranto's visitors[edit]

Hello. I deleted your list of four officials (Jusuf Kalla, Budi Gunawan, Tedjo Edhy Purdijatno and Agum Gumelar) who visited Wiranto as he recovers from the 10 October knife attack, as I feel it is irrelevant to his biography. I noted that you restored the list, on the grounds "it provides useful information about the response in senior Indonesian security circles to the incident". Could you please elaborate on why this is "useful information"? A Cabinet minister is attacked, so he is visited by other officials and his predecessor. I don't see what is so useful about that, so I would be grateful if you can explain the importance. If it is so useful to mention those four visitors, why not also mention that Wiranto was also visited by Aburizal Bakrie, Agung Laksono, Syarief Hasan, Ma'ruf Amin, Sofyan Djalil, Luhut Pandjaitan and Prabowo Subianto? The only bit that I find interesting is that Wiranto's wife and doctors did not allow Prabowo to have a face-to-face meeting with Wiranto. They told him Wiranto was sleeping. Prabowo said he would return for another visit. SiberianCat (talk) 05:06, 14 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

  • Thank you for your message. I appreciate your response. I realise that there are pros and cons here. I don't really feel strongly about it. I can accept the deletion of these names (which you kindly list) if that seems best. But let me explain why I think it is useful to list them. There are several points.
(1) I thought it was useful to note the line-up of people who quickly visited Wiranto. The composition of the line-up is notable. The group listed are all part of the senior military and security group at the top of the Indonesian government. No senior civilian politicians were mentioned in the early reports. Nobody like Megawati was listed. In saying this, I am not saying that senior civilians did not turn up. But certainly the spotlight was on support for Wiranto from the senior security people. I thought that was significant.
(2) As you say, when one digs into the reports, civilians such as Aburizal Bakrie and Agung Lasono visited Wiranto. However, their visits do not seem to have attracted the same degree of attention as the visits from the security people. But if it seems best to list some of them, that's fine by me. The only reason that I listed the four that I did was that I thought it was best to keep the list relatively short. Perhaps it would be best to list two of the security people, and two of the civilian politicians? I'd be quite happy with that approach.
(3) Your point about Prawbowo is interesting. I have not seen the reports about this. I suppose one should not make too much of it but it's an interesting report.
(4) If you still think it is best to delete the four names, that's OK with me. Or if you think it would be best to adjust the list so that there is a (short) list of security and civilians, that's fine by me too -- my only aim was to give a flavour of how the Jakarta elite responded when Wiranto was under treatment in hospital. In fact, that was my main aim in listing the four -- my aim was to give a flavour (to non-Indonesian specialist readers especially) of how the Jakarta elite responded when Wirtanto was in hospital.
I hope I have responded to your points. My kind thanks for your good comments. Pmccawley (talk) 07:42, 14 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
    • Thank you for your prompt and detailed response. You mention "No senior civilian politicians were mentioned in the early reports. Nobody like Megawati was listed", but surely Joko Widodo and Jusuf Kalla -- among those listed in early reports as visitors -- are civilian politicians. As for Megawati Soekarnoputri, she has been in Bali, partly to celebrate Puan's long-awaited selection as DPR Speaker, so she could not just pop over to RSPAD for a courtesy visit. In my view, the Jakarta elite (both civilian political and military elite) reacted with protocol sympathy, although even in some corridors of power in Jakarta there are unfounded murmurings and speculation that the attack was staged. Such speculation, in my opinion, stems from those who refuse to believe that religious fervor could inspire an assassination attempt. Much of it comes from those who did not support Jokowi in the April election. Also interesting was Luhut insisting that people not make too much of the attack; perhaps concerned that Indonesia might be portrayed as unsafe or unstable. SiberianCat (talk) 13:50, 14 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Thank you. I agree with all of this. It's a very good summary of where things seem to stand at present. You are right, of course, that Jokowi and Jusuf Kalla are civilians. I was not careful enough in what I said. However, it would be good, I suppose, to work in some of this commentary into the existing section about the attack? There is sometimes a thin line between reporting facts (which is emphasised in Wikipedia) and including commentary. But my guess is that many international readers would not have any good feel for the issues you spell out. I'd favour working some of these points into the piece.
At this stage, I will leave it to your judgement. If you still think it best to remove the names listed, please go ahead. I will not revert the change. But if you would like to add a little along the lines of what you have said, that would be good too. I would welcome some additional information on the page.Pmccawley (talk) 21:12, 14 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • I'll leave things be. Would that I had sufficient time and inclination, there are still so many gaps to fill on Indonesian subjects and people on Wikipedia. Perhaps an endless and thankless task, though certainly neither futile nor unsatisfying. SiberianCat (talk) 15:59, 15 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • OK. Agree on all points. I certainly agree that there are many gaps to fill on Indonesian subjects. We need to keep trying to improve Wikipedia content on Indonesia.Pmccawley (talk) 20:30, 15 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, it seems that you are not in fact an AfC reviewer – at least, I don't see your name on this list. In that case it's probably best if you refrain from reviewing any further draft, and leave that work to those who've been approved to do it. If you'd like to join the AfC team and think you meet the criteria, do please post a request here – extra help is always needed! Sorry for my initial wrong assumption! Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 17:16, 30 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oh, I see. Well, I believe the creation of the page was done in good faith (without realising the importance of the copyright issue). A good deal of the original text is from an Australian National University (ANU) website which is in the public domain. However, I am not familiar with copyright issues and do not know what issues are involved in drawing on the ANU website (although the journal is from the ANU). The creator of the Wikipedia page is one of the people largely responsible for the material on the ANU website and so, in effect, their own material is largely being used. So what should be done? Should the original author of the website rewrite the page in a way to avoid copyright issues? Grateful your good advice in this matter. Pmccawley (talk) 20:43, 30 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding Suharto[edit]

Do you have any idea to add the Discrimination against Chinese Indonesians to the Suharto page? Because in Indonesian history, the racism towards Chinese were most staunchly occurred during these years, not to mention the communist purge and the riots in 1998. Thanks. Flix11 (talk) 06:25, 1 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • Thank you for your good interest. I'm not opposed to discussing policies towards Chinese in Indonesia, including during the Soeharto era. However, it seems to me that the topic is complicated. Unfortunately, and very sadly, discrimination against Chinese is often quite deeply-rooted in Indonesian history. If we are going to discuss the history of anti-Chinese attitudes in Indonesia, I don't think the topic should be just added in a few words to the Soeharto page. It's misleading to just put in a few words on Soeharto's page. For example, some rich Chinese did very well during the Soeharto era. I think it would really best best to add some good discussion to the "Chinese Indonesians" page. Kind regards. Pmccawley (talk) 06:36, 1 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

An article you recently created, Mubyarto, does not have enough sources and citations as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. or enoigh evidence of notability as an academc to meet WP:PROF . I created a stub today with the aim of encouraging (and facilitating) my Indonesian colleagues to add to the biography of one of their well-known colleagues. My Indonesian colleagues asked me to do this to help them. But suddenly the whole thing collapses. The page is moved (I do not understand where it has been moved to) and the whole attempt to create a good page on a distinguished Indonesian economist gets pushed aside.
