How we will see unregistered users[edit]

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Move page[edit]

Hi PrimeHunter.. Can you help me to move Kendrick Lee Yen Hui to Kendrick Lee? I have trying to moved the page per WP:NCP, but Kendrick Lee page redirect to Kendrick Lee Yen Hui. I hope you can help. Thank you Stvbastian (talk) 09:45, 31 January 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Stvbastian: Yen Hui has been in the title (at different positions) for 15 years since creation. Based on Google the short form appears more common but it's not a big difference. I think it should go through WP:RM. PrimeHunter (talk) 16:28, 31 January 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Template:Sort keys?[edit]

{{Sort keys}} has no transclusions, incoming links, documentation, or categories. I would usually take it to TFD, but you tend to know what you are doing, so I am asking here first. – Jonesey95 (talk) 15:39, 7 March 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Jonesey95: Thanks. I sometimes get sidetracked and never return. Example use: Sort keys for Category:2021 ATP Tour. I think it has some uses for editors working on category sorting, e.g. to sort singles and doubles more systematically in Category:2021 ATP Tour. Can you give me a week to think about working on documentation, links and some other things? PrimeHunter (talk) 16:43, 7 March 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Sure, take your time. It may get nominated by someone else, but you should receive a notice. There is a group of us working to clean up Wikipedia:Database reports/Unused templates/1. If the template has one transclusion on any page, it will drop out of the report, which will make it less likely that someone TFD's it. – Jonesey95 (talk) 17:01, 7 March 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

maint cat problem[edit]

Hi, I'm stumped with on member of Category:Articles with invalid date parameter in template, a redirect - Noelle Bush. I'm not sure what is causing this, the redirect itself doesn't show the cat and hasn't been edited in years. Since it's protected, I can't try a null edit myself. You may want to add {{R to section}} to categorize it also, since it is the only uncategorized page from before 2022. MB 19:51, 20 March 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@MB: Something, probably systematic null edits to pages which haven't been edited for a long time, is causing category updates recently. The error category was added by {{uncategorized|date=November 2015}} before a bot responded by creating Category:Uncategorized from November 2015 today. I have added {{R to section}} as suggested. Category pages are often updated much later than the list of categories on a page. I wouldn't be surprised if Category:Uncategorized pages soon gets other newly bot-created subcategories. New administrator activity requirement[edit]

The administrator policy has been updated with new activity requirements following a successful Request for Comment.

Beginning January 1, 2023, administrators who meet one or both of the following criteria may be desysopped for inactivity if they have:

  1. Made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least a 12-month period OR
  2. Made fewer than 100 edits over a 60-month period

Administrators at risk for being desysopped under these criteria will continue to be notified ahead of time. Thank you for your continued work.

People in their 50s dying of old age[edit]

People in their 50s dying of old age

William Hartnell was about 55 years old when he played the original incarnation of the Doctor in Doctor Who and maybe 58 in his final story. While Richard Hurndall was about 72 or 73 when he played him in the 20th anniversary story The Five Doctors and David Bradley was 75 in the 12th Doctor's (Peter Capaldi) two final episodes The Doctor Falls and Twice Upon a Time. Here are images of 55 year old actors, 58, 72-73 and 75. And the cause of the First Doctor's regeneration was old age. 86.130.4.167 (talk) 18:38, 25 May 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Can people die if they've become old, weak and worn out in their 50s? And did the original Doctor look about mid-50s, 60s or 70s? 86.130.4.167 (talk) 19:26, 26 May 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi, since you seem to have sound knowledge of this kind of issue, I venture asking you whether you deem this revert by Jonesey95 justified, as now there is again only surplus whitespace rendered at Template:Div col/doc#Redirects instead of transclusions of those template links (unlike the ones above for Div col, which are actually displayed correctly). Hildeoc (talk) 18:39, 18 August 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Hildeoc: Template:Div col/doc is used as documentation at both Template:Div col#Redirects and Template:Div col end#Redirects. The code was designed to only show redirects for the viewed template. That seems sensible but with a little more code it's possible to show both on the doc page itself. I have done that.[1] PrimeHunter (talk) 19:21, 18 August 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Oh, thank you so, so much! I knew you would come up with the solution I was seeking. You're great. Best wishes--Hildeoc (talk) 20:24, 18 August 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
PS: So there's no workaround to the whitespace rendered for the invisible transclusion to the template as such?--Hildeoc (talk) 20:29, 18 August 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Hildeoc: A little whitespace in the doc part of a template page isn't a big issue but OK, I fiddled with the code.[2] PrimeHunter (talk) 22:38, 18 August 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks a lot once more – and sorry for bothering, but those programming issues are just beyond my skills. All the best, Hildeoc (talk) 23:23, 18 August 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Request for a 3rd Opinion[edit]

Hello, I have had rather poor interactions with an editor on the following article; https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_data_recovery_companies

The user and I had a brief conversation on my IP page before I created my account; https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:173.160.59.125

As the guidelines suggest, I attempted to reach resolution, but the editor refuses to engage in any productive discussion and simply reverts any edit to the page, without contributing to the Talk page I started to help resolve this dispute.

While I understand that Wikipedia is not an advertising platform, we are not attempting to do any form of advertising. I am simply trying to add our company to a list in which it belongs - and I've read through the guidelines quite thoroughly to ensure there is no breach, and believe we are right to be included in the list. A 3rd opinion would be greatly appreciated to help settle the matter, as I am concerned this is becoming an edit war, and I have no interest in such activity.

Thank you, Davoguha (talk) 16:11, 24 August 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Davoguha: We have a process for this: Wikipedia:Third opinion. Note that it requires a brief neutral description of the dispute. PrimeHunter (talk) 00:58, 25 August 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thank you, PrimeHunter - I opted not to add to that section, as it requests that a situation be thoroughly discussed on a talk page before making a request. I noted another page mentioned to "avoid the drama" by reaching out directly to an admin. Unfortunately, the editor in question has refused to contribute to the talk page, and simply responds to anything I do by calling it "spam", and claiming I am breaking rules - and has expressed no interest in resolution, simply proclaiming themselves "right". Primarily, the point of debate is whether or not a company can/should be added to a list page, without their own Wiki article existing - and if they can/should, then how it should be added to said list (Externally linked? No linking?). I appreciate your time, thank you. Davoguha (talk) 21:33, 25 August 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Tracking categories considered harmful[edit]

Here you say that A tracking category needs a good reason. I agree. Do you know of a consensus on that matter that I can cite? I'm interested in getting rid of certain categories which slow down page rendering and have outlived their usefulness, but the changes may prove contentious. I apologize if this is an old discussion and that is because it is. Back in 2006 I thought I put an end to the argument that there was no source material. Nobel Prize[edit]

Hi. There has been no serious discussion on the talk page suggesting or hinting that the Prize in Economics should be in the infobox. Repeated reverts by accounts- without a word of commentary, which do not engage in discussion or the talk page- those do not deserve any more than a quick use of the undo button just as they are doing to my edits. My edit was careful and thoughtful and preserved the relationship of the Prize in Economics prominently in the head of the article. If people are interested in that prize, they are welcome to read about it. But it is "Not a Nobel Prize", and editors repeatedly removing that comment from the article are doing a disservice and encouraging the spread of misinformation.

Is there a wikipedia policy to preserve factually incorrect claims and WP:WEASEL words as the status quo until some sort of consensus process happens on the Talk page? I am not a wikipedia expert but it seems that there is no "preserve the status quo, even if it clearly goes against cited references from primary sources", but maybe I am incorrect. 128.237.82.18 (talk) 15:22, 13 October 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

These are your own opinions. Wikipedia operates by reliable sources and consensus. A single editor doesn't have the power to control an article and permanently remove anything they personally consider incorrect witohut being able to convince other editors of the article. See Wikipedia:Dispute resolution for your options which do not include to keep reverting everybody else. PrimeHunter (talk) 15:50, 13 October 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Template:List of plant genus names with etymologies TOC[edit]

Were you going to do something with {{List of plant genus names with etymologies TOC}}? It looks like a decent replacement for the long TOC that is in each article now. – Jonesey95 (talk) 05:02, 16 October 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Jonesey95: I was unhappy with some details and didn't know how to handle is. Perfect is the enemy of good. I will return to it soon and at least make it a decent replacement. PrimeHunter (talk) 18:12, 16 October 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I sympathize with that. I would normally TFD an unused template, but it's pretty new, and I thought I would ask first. – Jonesey95 (talk) 00:10, 17 October 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Duplicate redirects[edit]

Can you look at Catherine Institute for Daughters Of The Nobility and Catherine Institute for Daughters Of The Nobility. They look identical, but are not. There some hidden character in the "Of" in the first one. Microsoft Word detects it as a misspelling. I was going to CSD it, but that would probably be too confusing. Can you just delete it. Thanks. MB 02:53, 28 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Research Institute of Clinical and Experimental Lymрhology is another to delete. The target is the corrected version. It looks like these are coming from User:Mykhal/Articles with name in multiple scripts. I don't see any problem with the majority of these that have a visual difference. But these two are very confusing. MB 03:06, 28 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@MB: Your first two links are identical and only have normal letters. I found the bad name Сatherine Institute for Daughters Of The Nobility. It starts with Es (Cyrillic) instead of latin C. That's the only issue, "Of" is normal. Research Institute of Clinical and Experimental Lymрhology has Er (Cyrillic) instead of Latin p in the last word. I have deleted the redirects per G6 although it's a stretch. R3 doesn't apply when they were left by moves. PrimeHunter (talk) 04:44, 28 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
