Contributor copyright investigation

This CCI cleanup subpage has been opened because concerns of multiple point infringement have been substantiated and further steps are necessary to address the serious risk of copyright violation from the listed contributor. Listings are not intended to imply a presumption of bad faith on the part of any contributor, as copyright laws vary widely around the world and many contributors who violate Wikipedia's copyrights policy do so inadvertently through not understanding it or the United States' laws that govern it.

If you are here because of a note on an article's talk page explaining removal of text, please do not restore any removed text without first ensuring that the text does not duplicate, closely paraphrase or plagiarize from a previously published source. You are welcome to use sourced facts that may have been removed to create new content in your own words or to incorporate brief quotations of copyrighted material in accordance with the non-free content policy and guideline.

Instructions[edit]

All contributors with no history of copyright problems are welcome to contribute to clean up.

If contributors have been shown to have a history of extensive copyright violation, it may be assumed without further evidence that all of their major contributions are copyright violations, and they may be removed indiscriminately in accordance with Wikipedia:Copyright violations. However, to avoid collateral damage, efforts should be made when possible to verify infringement before removal.

When every section is completed, please alter the listing for this CCI at Wikipedia:CCI#Open_investigations to include the tag "completed=yes". This will alert a clerk that the listing needs to be archived.

Text[edit]

  • Examine the article or the diffs linked below.
  • If the contributor has added creative content, either evaluate it carefully for copyright concerns or remove it.
  • If you remove text presumptively, place {{subst:CCI|name=Contributor name}} on the article's talk page.
  • If you specifically locate infringement and remove it (or revert to a previous clean version), place {{subst:cclean}} on the article's talk page. The url parameter may be optionally used to indicate source.
  • If there is insufficient creative content on the page for it to survive the removal of the text or it is impossible to extricate from subsequent improvements, replace it with {{subst:copyvio}}, linking to the investigation subpage in the url parameter. List the article as instructed at the copyright problems board, but you do not need to notify the contributor. Your note on the CCI investigation page serves that purpose.
  • To tag an article created by the contributor for presumptive deletion, place {{subst:copyvio|url=see talk}} on the article's face and {{subst:CCId|name=Contributor name}} on the article's talk page. List the article as instructed at the copyright problems board, but you do not need to notify the contributor.
  • After examining an article:
  • replace the diffs after the colon on the listing with indication of whether problem was found (add {{y}}) or not (add {{n}}). If the article is blanked and may be deleted, please indicate as much after the {{y}}.
  • Follow with your username and the time to indicate to others that the article has been evaluated and appropriately addressed. This is automatically generated by four tildes (~~~~)
  • If a section is complete, consider collapsing it by placing {{collapse top}} and {{collapse bottom}} beneath the section header and after the final listing.

Background[edit]

Tiamut has been a prolific contributor to Wikipedia and generally her articles are well-sourced and well-written. The issue here is that there are paragraphs where there are only superficial differences between the Wikipedia text and the original source. For example:

Another question:The articles are no longer viewable. How do I go about improving them or addressing the complaints? Not all the text in all the articles follows as close a paraphrasing as the one example cited above. It seems rather rash to make the whole article unavailable as a result. Having looked at a couple of the articles I'm not convinced that blanking them is consistent with the instructions in the last 3 paragraphs of Wikipedia:Copyright_violations#Dealing_with_copyright_violations. Look at Hebron glass for example (Duplication Detector report). There are a couple of false positives based on quotes but do the rest of the instances of duplicated text justify blanking the entire article ? I don't know. The concern is the article may paraphrase from more sources than those given above. The article is listed at WP:CP regardless of whether it is blanked or tagged with {{close paraphrase}}. MER-C 07:04, 11 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hello MER ... I'm sorry that you feel the need for this. Its true I have closely paraphrased some of my additions to articles, always citing the sources used at the end of the sentences added, because of the contentiousness of the topic area I edit in, where unsourced material or material seen to stray too far from the sources is often deleted. I will avoid close paraphrasing from now on, but that means the material I add is more likely to be removed by editors seeking to suppress POVs with which they disagree. Damned if I do, damned if I don't though I suppose.
As to the current review, I would like to know how I can help. What can I do to move the process along and make the workload less burdensome on you and other editors. I would also like to know if I am now considered a problem editor, or if this is omething that will be determined at the end of the review. I sympathize with your concern, especially given your topic area. But copyright concerns are more important than POV because of the legal consideration. There are measures in place to control POV pushing.
In response to your second question, the answer is no. Your cooperation with us is greatly appreciated. We only consider sanctions when the editor does not act in good faith and/or does not respond to the concerns in question. We only undertake presumptive removal when copying is hard to determine, widespread or in bad faith.

Please see Talk:Hebron glass/Temp. I would also ask that the articles that have been blanked above be reviewed first and that problematic sections be tagged or fixed with the rest restored. I am concerned they will be deleted before I have a chance to improve them (it says they cn be deleted after one week). They are not copyright violations in toto. The issue is some sentences being too closely paraphrased and it ŵould be a shame to lose the articles altogether over this. Being blanked does not necessarily result in deletion, the admins who close listings at Wikipedia:Copyright problems tend to salvage whatever content they can, unless there is a presumption of copying.
As for the rewrite, there are a couple of problems remaining: [1] (check the context first!). I haven't checked the other sources. The rewrite will be reviewed again when the WP:CP listing is closed. MER-C 07:31, 13 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
