The sentence (and probably the image of Antarctica like the one in the section January 30) Russian expedition lead by Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen and Mikhail Petrovich Lazarev approached the Antarctic coast should be included in the section 28 January 1820, because:

  • Russian sources claim, that the first to discover Antarctica was the expedition mentioned above.
  • the sentence Edward Bransfield of the Royal Navy landed on the mainland of Antarctica about Edward Bransfield, who is claimed first to discover Antarctica by Great Britain's sources is included in the section 30 January 1820.

Thanks for the suggestion. The line on Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen has a good chance of bumping off the line on Finnish Civil War from the 'Selected anniversaries' template. Let's check back in about 355 days. We'll see what other good Wikipages will be available to feature on the MainPage then.  :-) -- PFHLai 01:38, 2005 Feb 2 (UTC)
P.S. History of Antarctica may need to be cleaned up a bit to clarify the issue of "who got there first".

January 28, 1077[edit]

I strongly suggest adding the Walk to Canossa to this anniversary: "*1077 - Holy Roman Emperor Henry IV kneels before Pope Gregory VII in the fortress at Canossa and is readmitted into the Catholic Church." It's hard to overestimate the historic significance of this event, since it has defined the position of the Roman Catholic church as a worldly power throughout the centuries. Challenger[edit]

I would say that the Challenger disaster should be listed. It is a highly notable event which occurred on 28 January 1986. --GW_SimulationsUser Page | Talk 23:55, 27 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I completely agree. As an event it was quite significant and I feel that it deserves a far greater priority of recognition than some of the other "on this day" articles. -BC —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.190.86.142 (talk) 11:25, 28 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

January 28, 1938[edit]

An issue needs to be brought to your attention.

The listing for 1938 says "1938 - The first ski tow in America begins operation in Vermont." Go to the "ski tow" Wikipedia page to read "The first ski tow was apparently installed in 1933 by Alec Foster at Shawbridge in the Laurentians outside Montreal, Quebec," which is in North America. If you mean, "in the United States," that Wiki goes on to say: "It was quickly copied at Woodstock, Vermont in New England in 1934...." It can have happened in 1934 or 1938, but it can't be both. And, if you mean US, say US, not America. Thanks.4.249.186.20 01:08, 30 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

January 28, 1958[edit]

I believe that Charles Starkweather and Caril Ann Fugate killed C. Lauer Ward, his wife and his maid today, rather than began their murder spree... while the bodies weren't discovered until later, those killings happened on the 21st, I believe... anyone know for sure?

  • We have been criticised on the Help Desk for omitting the Challenger disaster 30th anniversary. (See above for two others who though it should be considered in previous years.) Dbfirs 20:42, 28 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

End of Rashidun Caliphate[edit]

A new blurb is added regarding the end of Rashidun Caliphate by assassination of Ali. I suggest to consider its inclusion for 2017. Mhhossein (talk) 06:50, 24 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
