Revision as of 18:24, 28 September 2005
Requested moves is used to request, and vote on, article moves that are not straight-forward or that require the assistance of Wikipedia administrators. For example, the proposed move may be controversial, or technical expertise may be needed to merge edit histories. The move should usually be discussed on the talk pages of any relevant articles first, particularly where a page move may be controversial. For simple uncontroversial moves follow the advice at Help:Renaming (moving) a page instead.
Approval voting is encouraged for page moves requested on this page. Requested moves may be implemented if there is a Wikipedia community consensus (60% or more) supporting the moving of an article after five (5) days under discussion on the talk page of the article to be moved, or earlier at the discretion of an administrator. The time for discussion may be extended if a consensus has not emerged.
- To merge two articles please make a request at Wikipedia:Duplicate articles instead of here.
- This is not the proper place to request the "moving" of images or categories. See below for more information.
![]() | This page has a backlog that requires the attention of willing editors. Please remove this notice when the backlog is cleared. |
Instructions
First, note that many page moves may be accomplished by any logged in user by using the move button at the top of the user interface (see the help page). Requested moves is intended only for moves that either may be disputed, so that consensus should be obtained before the move, or that require administrator involvement because the intended new location also has a page history.
Please see #Relevant policies and guidelines if you are unsure whether a page move is appropriate.
To request a page move, follow this three-step process:
(replace PageName with the name of the page to be moved and NewName with your proposed name)
I. | Add the request to the
list on this page To aid the administrators, add a line with the day's date on it directly under the heading of the Current Notices subsection, if it has not already been added for this day. Today is June 23 2025.
To enter a request for a single page to be moved to a new name, add a line at the top of the section under the date line:
A handy way to do this is to write the following on an empty line:
which will include all the necessary formatting (do not forget the "subst:"). For more complicated requests see #Multiple page moves for formatting suggestions. Include the page's name in your edit summary. Save this page. |
II. | Add the move template to talk page.
Enter the following text at the top of the talk page of the page you want moved:
If you want a page to be moved, but don't yet know what name it should be given, you can use {{moveoptions}} instead to indicate that there are several options to discuss. |
III. | Create a place for discussion
If one does not already exist, create a section on the talk page of the page you want moved for discussion. This can take any form that is reasonable for administrators to follow, but copying the following is suggested: ==Requested move== The reasons for move copied from the entry on the [[WP:RM]] page ===Discussion=== If you are proposing that multiple closely related pages should all be moved for the same reason (see #Multiple page moves), it may be advisable to create this discussion on only a single talk page and provide links from the other talk pages to this centralized discussion. Please include "move proposal" or similar in the edit summary and don't mark it as minor. Consider checking the "Watch this page" box to follow the page in your watchlist. Save the page. |
What to do on the article page
If the move you are suggesting is uncontroversial, for example, it is correcting spelling or capitalisation, update the article reflecting the title it should have (for example, the article is at My Dog but should be at My dog, change the opening sentence to '''My dog''' is furry.).
Extraordinary Proposals
- Wikipedia talk:Votes for undeletion — Wikipedia:Votes for undeletion → Wikipedia:Deletion review – This has been proposed by several editors in line with the above. Uncle G 23:51:49, 2005-08-26 (UTC)
- Or Wikipedia talk:Votes for undeletion — Wikipedia:Votes for undeletion → Wikipedia:Undeletion. Simpler and less ambiguous. Septentrionalis
- I think the goal is not to make this simply another VfU but rather a review of both deletions and undeletions. We need a page specifically to review admin actions regarding a vote. - Tεxτurε 14:18, 30 August 2005 (UTC)
- I support expanding the current VFU to be a page to discuss disputed "keep" results as well as disputed deletions, and I therefore also support such a name change. The situation of an admin overriding another admins AFD closure is as of yet not covered by policy, such actions remain very controversial, and we need a process to handle it. Since such situations should remain rare I don't see the need for a separate page, and I think both types of disputes can be consolidated into one page. Sjakkalle (Check!) 11:05, 13 September 2005 (UTC)
- Support - in case that isn't clear - Tεxτurε 16:34, 22 September 2005 (UTC)
It isn't clear to me what the previous Support votes are supporting.
- Support the move to Wikipedia:Undeletion as an immediate measure, Oppose expansion of the page's role. I think this requires further discussion on a separate project page, since we already have a confusing vote with so few comments. I think the whole deletion/undeletion mess belongs under the Wikipedia:Requests for Comment branch of the community tree anyway. Unfocused 03:15, 27 September 2005 (UTC)
Current notices
- Please add new notices to the top of this section. Discussion and votes go on the corresponding talk pages, not in these listings.
- Talk:The G-Code (album) — The G-Code (album) → The G-Code – Unneeded dab phrase in title gren グレン 18:24, 28 September 2005 (UTC)
- Talk:Lindsey (British subdivision) — Lindsey (British subdivision) → Lindsey – Lindsey has been made into a redirect to a disambig page Lindsay which has broken 34 links. If there was any confusion between Lindsay and Lindsey this could have been explained with a 'see also' notice on the latter, rather than breaking lots of existing links. Owain 13:38, 28 September 2005 (UTC)
- Talk:Henry A. Reynolds — Henry A. Reynolds → Henry Reynolds (historian) — the second page is currently a redir, but before that it was a duplicate, so it has a non-empty edit history. --bainer (talk) 05:46, 28 September 2005 (UTC)
- Talk:Call Letters — Call Letters → Call letters — Letters is a common noun and should not be capitalized (that is, except at the beginning of a sentence, as I did). --/ɛvɪs/ /tɑːk/ /kɑntɹɪbjuʃ(ə)nz/ 03:16, 28 September 2005 (UTC)
- I would go so far as to suggest moving it back to Call sign or Callsign -- it's a more general term (call letters being a special case of call signs; not all call signs are call letters per se). Call letters should be a redirect -- I tried to make the move myself but got caught up in a morass of redirects. Haikupoet 04:15, 28 September 2005 (UTC)
- Talk:EVite – EVite → Evite – the name EVite was an error by an anonymous editor at 24.9.113.28 on August 4; that same user then started editing Evite on August 31; later on August 31, User:Aaron Brenneman merged the contents into EVite when they should have been merged into Evite, since that is the company's official name — Mike Dillon 02:29, 28 September 2005 (UTC)
- Talk:East Timor — East Timor → Timor Leste – Apparent page-move-request orphan: gained template and some ad hoc discussion, but no listing here. Alai 02:12, 28 September 2005 (UTC)
- Explanation for the request: While East Timor is still the most common name in English, the government of Timor-Leste has explicitly stated that it wishes to be known only as Timor-Leste. — File:Austria flag large.png ナイトスタリオン ㇳ–ㇰ — 13:55, 28 September 2005 (UTC)
- Talk:United States Court of Appeals — United States Court of Appeals → United States court of appeals – this article deals with the class of courts of appeals rather than a unique Court of Appeals — assistance will probably be needed as the target page is occupied by a redirect — DLJessup (talk) 01:31, 28 September 2005 (UTC)
- Talk:U.S. District Court for the Northern Mariana Islands — U.S. District Court for the Northern Mariana Islands → District Court for the Northern Mariana Islands – name of the court is District Court for the Northern Mariana Islands according to 48 U.S.C. § 1821 — DLJessup (talk) 01:15, 28 September 2005 (UTC)
- Talk:DTN — DTN → Data Transmission Network – Page name shouldn't be an unexpanded TLA. Podolsky 00:31, 28 September 2005 (UTC)
- Talk:Driftless Zone — Driftless Zone → Driftless Area – New title is proper. (see Talk) 24.211.0.91 23:37, 27 September 2005 (UTC)
- Talk:Belangalo State Forest - Belangalo State Forest → Belanglo State Forest - Belanglo is misspelt in the heading.
- Talk:Penguin Island (South Shetlands) – Penguin Island (South Shetlands) → Penguin Island (South Shetland Islands) – I did copy/paste from Penguin Island (South Shetlands) into Penguin Island (South Shetland Islands) instead of moving the page correctly from Penguin Island (South Shetlands) into Penguin Island (South Shetland Islands). -- Citylover 04:44, 27 September 2005 (UTC)
- Talk:Horizons (Disney) – Horizons (Disney) → Horizons – the "(Disney)" part is unnecessary, as nothing else is specifically named "Horizons" and, besides, the page has a disambig at the top of it. — Brian Kendig 01:56, 27 September 2005 (UTC)
- Talk:Chapeltown — Chapeltown → Chapeltown (West Yorkshire) – Chapeltown should disambiguate between this and Chapeltown, South Yorkshire
- Talk:Federal Enterprise Architecture (FEA) — Federal Enterprise Architecture (FEA) → Federal Enterprise Architecture – abbreviation included in name in error Gletiecq 04:19, 27 September 2005 (UTC)
- Máxima, Princess of Orange — Talk:Máxima, Princess of Orange → Princess Máxima of the Netherlands; according to the Dutch government, only the heir to the throne is titled Prince(ss) of Orange. Her official title is Princess Máxima of the Netherlands.Prsgoddess187 23:34, 26 September 2005 (UTC)
- Talk:Gökçeada and Bozcaada — Gökçeada and Bozcaada → Imbros and Tenedos These are the English names for the islands; Shakespeare wrote "To Tenedos they come" not 'Bozcaada' ('T&C 'Prol.' 11). The Turkish names are unknown outside Turkey. Septentrionalis 21:40, 26 September 2005 (UTC)
- Talk:The Baby-Sitters Club (movie) — The Baby-Sitters Club (movie) → The Baby-Sitters Club (film) – film should be in the title not movie Arnie587 18:20, 26 September 2005 (UTC)

- Talk:Bast (goddess) — Bast (goddess) → Bast – Bast was about a plant fibre. I moved it to Bast (biology) because the article on the goddess is much longer and has more links to it than the fibre. I cannot, however, move Bast (goddess) to Bast. --Tydaj 01:18, 26 September 2005 (UTC)
- Talk:Neutral — Neutral → Neutrality – Current title is an adjective, but it should be a noun. Neutrality redirs to Neutral —Felix the Cassowary (ɑe hɪː jɐ) 07:09, 26 September 2005 (UTC)
- Talk:Vivid (disambiguation) — Vivid (disambiguation) → Vivid – Simplify disambiguation. Vivid used to be an article about the Living Colour album, which I moved to Vivid (album). Since this automatically changes Vivid to a redirect to the album, I cannot move the disambig page to the unqualified version. --EdgarAllanToe 20:23, 26 September 2005 (UTC)

- Talk:Germanistics – Germanistics → German Language and Literature – {reason for move} — Kdammers 04:49, 25 September 2005 (UTC)
- Talk:GermanisticsGerman Language and Literature — GermanisticsGerman Language and Literature → "Germanistics" is rarely used and was the articles title because the person naming it simply anglicized the title of the German article and subject area – {{{3}}} Kdammers 04:49, 25 September 2005 (UTC)
- Talk:C Plus Plus — C Plus Plus → C plus plus – Unnecessary to capitalize "plus". Fredrik Orderud 19:47, 25 September 2005 (UTC)
Shouldn't the article just be at C++? which is by far how it is most commonly referenced? Both C Plus Plus and C plus plus would then be redirects.Nevermind, I see that there are still some technical limitations on article names. older≠wiser 20:18, 25 September 2005 (UTC)

- talk:Sid Eudy-- Sid Eudy → Sid Vicious – 'Sid Vicious' is the stage name of pro wrestler Sid Eudy. it is under this name that has won ALL of his numerous titles, including the titles in WCW and the WWF (now WWE). As per Wikipedia policy, I ask his entry be moved to his widely known stage name and out of his unknown (by large) real name.

- Template:Airplane Airlines of Canada moved over Template:Airlines of Canada. Both the editing parties involved have decided that the original move to Airplane Airlines should be undone. - Move Andrew "Test" Martin to Andrew Martin please. User:DarknessProductionsInc moved Andrew Martin to Andrew "Test" Martin as Martin has legally changed his name to Andrew Test Martin.... Talk:Jewelry - Jewelry → Jewellery. This page was cut & paste moved against policy in June of this year by an anon IP. Jooler 12:48, 22 September 2005 (UTC)- The page history has been merged, but the article, as it stands, reflects the American spelling. --AllyUnion (talk) 19:01, 22 September 2005 (UTC)

- Talk:Piri Reis Map - Piri Reis Map → Piri Reis map. The current title isn't consistent with our naming conventions (the "M" should be lowercase in "Map"). There already is a redirect, but it has a history, as it initially pointed to Piri Reis article. -- Sandius 15:36, 22 September 2005 (UTC)
- Pearl Lange → Pearl Lang. Name was misspelled on original page. Krychek 18:45, 22 September 2005 (UTC)
- Keane → Keane (band) and Keane (disambiguation) → Keane. There seems to be no good reason for a minor pop group to sit in the main name space; as the dab page indicates, there are many Keanes, of whom a number are at least as well known as the band. User:Violetriga's moves to the current situation have provoked something of an edit skirmish, including cut-and-paste moves, so I think that the issue should be sorted out more formally. --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 21:39, 21 September 2005 (UTC)

- Talk:Samba TNG software — Samba TNG software → Samba TNG – The "Software" came from "Samba software", where it was needed to differentiate from the language Samba. However Samba TNG isn't likely to be confused with anything, and isn't as cumbersome as its current page 69.142.2.68 21:21, 20 September 2005 (UTC)

- John Jordan "Buck" O'Neil → Buck O'Neil This is the name by how his is most known, and most Wikipedia articles of people don't have their full name as the title. --Hottentot
- Talk:Daugava — Daugava → Western Dvina – Western Dvina is more commonly used name for this river, and in most of its flow it's called Western Dvina (in Belarus and Russia), being called Daugava only in small its part in Latvia. I couldn't move it by myself because Western Dvina page has history. Monkbel 21:46, 19 September 2005 (UTC)
- Talk:Public school (UK) – Public school (UK) → various options, but probably Public school (England, Wales, and Northern Ireland). One editor insists on making this move because, he claims, "public school" isn't used or understood in Scotland in the way described in the article. I've had to protect the page from moves to stop him moving it to different variations on his theme, as there is no consensus for a move on the Talk page, and some opposition (with evidence). —-Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 19:02, 19 September 2005 (UTC)
- Baden Germany should be moved back to Baden, which is a disambig page that now largely duplicates the content of Baden (disambiguation), for the reason that it refers to the most important use of the name. Martg76 16:51, 18 September 2005 (UTC)
- Royal Coat of Arms of the United Kingdom for use in Scotland should be redirected to Royal Coat of Arms of Scotland. The former term is not a correct term, and is not used by any other source (google hits give 2, both wikipedia articles [3]). The use of coat of arms in Scotland is best served by one page. - Talk:Alexandra Fyodorovna (Charlotte of Prussia) – Alexandra Fyodorovna (Charlotte of Prussia) → (anything without the disambig) – The disambig parenthesis make for a horrible title. - Talk:Louis-Alphonse, Duc d'Anjou — Louis-Alphonse, Duc d'Anjou → Louis Alphonse, Duke of Anjou or Louis Alfonso, Duke of Anjou. We should use English, and this is questionable even as French. Procedure for admins
It is important to check to see if the redirect has major history; major history contains information about the addition of current text. (This is sometimes caused by the accidental creation of a duplicate article, or someone doing a cut-and-paste "move", instead of using the "Move this page" button.) Never simply delete such redirect pages, (which we need to keep for copyright reasons).
Major history
There are three ways to deal with a page move with a major history:
- The "right" way is to merge the histories, using the procedure outlined at Wikipedia:How to fix cut and paste moves. This is a slightly fraught procedure, which on rare occasions doesn't work correctly. There are also circumstances (for example duplicate pages) where it's not the correct choice anyway. Once done, it cannot easily be undone, so don't pick this option unless it's definitely the right one.
- Alternatively, the article and the redirect can be swapped. This leaves the bifurcated history, but has less chance of causing problems. Simply move one of the pair to a temporary name, and then delete the new redirect which that move will left behind at the original location; next, move the other page of the pair across to the first one's old location, and delete that left-over new redirect; finally, move the first one from its temporary location to its new name. You will then need to delete the new redirect at the temporary location, and finally fix the old redirect to point at the article again (at this point, it will be pointing to itself).
- Another option is for redirect pages with major history to be archived into a talk namespace, and a link to them put into the article's talk page. (An example of such a page is a Talk:Network SouthEast, which was originally created as a duplicate article at Network SouthEast and later archived, when the original article was moved from Network South East.)
Minor history
A minor history on the other hand contains no information, for example the redirect page Eric Tracy has a minor history but Eric Treacy (which incidentally is the correct spelling) could not be moved there because of a spelling mistake in the original page. Redirect pages with minor histories can simply be deleted.
Tidying up
Whichever of these various options you take, moving pages will create double redirects in any redirects that pointed to the original page location. These must be fixed; click on the "What links here" button of the new page location to check for them. It is the responsibility of the admin doing the move to fix these, though periodically a bot will fix any you miss.
When you complete an entry on this page (whether the move was accepted or rejected), don't forget to remove the {{move}} tag from the talk page and if a discussion on the move exists on the talk page please add and sign a comment to indicate whether the move was accepted or rejected. Also, remove the entry from this page (do not simply strike it through).
It's worth periodically checking either Category:Requested_moves or here to see if any pages missed this step. Checking either of these regularly has the side-benefit of finding pages where people added the {{Move}} tag to the page, but didn't realize they needed to edit WP:RM as well.
Admins volunteering to do tidying tasks should watch this page for new notices.
Pending history mergers
If the required merge of a copy/paste move cannot be done right away, then move the history to /history and use {{pending merge}}. For example, Bicycle Thieves was moved to Bicycle Thieves/history and {{pending merge|Bicycle Thieves}} placed on the article.
This also adds Category:Pending merge, all of which will be done later.
Additional notes
Multiple page moves
For single page moves with more than one option for the destination name:
- Talk:page to be moved -- page to be moved to new page or new page two etc -- {brief reason for move} -- ~~~~
For block moves:
- Talk:page to be moved -- page to be moved 1 to target page 1
- ...
- page to be moved n to target page n
- {brief reason for move} -- ~~~~
An example of how to request to move a block of pages:
- Talk:The Levellers -- Levellers to Levellers (disambiguation)
- The Levellers to Levellers
- the word "The" should be removed from the Levellers page. -- ~~~~
Another example of how to request to move a block of pages:
- Talk:Third world -- First world to First World,
- Second world to Second World and
- Third world to Third World
- This was a move made earlier in the year as a block move, after listing on this page because all three were blocked by edits to the target pages -- ~~~~
