ArbCom 2019 election voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2019 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 on Monday, 2 December 2019. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2019 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:19, 19 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Page deletion

I would like to delete some of Oon's draft pages because he made them with hesitation, also because I wanted to recreate the actual page from scratch. How should I delete draft pages since they are not like normal articles? Zero stylinx (talk) 04:50, 20 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

You can nominate them for deletion via WP:MfD or wait until 6 months have passed since the last meaningful edit after which you can tag it for speedy deletion under WP:G13. You could also just work on the drafts directly. — MarkH21 (talk) 04:54, 20 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

November 2019

Hi Mark, apologies for the confusion with regards to minor edits. I usually only edit formatting, or for example in the Bank of East Asia page, I just moved the dates from the beginning of the sentence to the end; I didn't change the dates, but just reordered them, hence I thought it was a minor edit. CityPride (talk) 03:11, 21 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@CityPride: Many of your edits add content or references, such as this one on Bank of East Asia. Adding/removing content, references, and categories are example of edits that cannot be marked as minor. Please carefully read the guidelines on minor edits. If in doubt, just don’t mark your edits as minor. — MarkH21 (talk) 04:43, 21 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Corey Baker

Hello there! I've been trying to add a page for the choreographer Corey Baker, and see that others have now done the same.

There are two drafts in progress on him, and from the chat on the latest draft I can see you've been involved in the edit process - I wondered what I could do to get things moving? SarahForty (talk) 22:28, 21 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@SarahForty: There are two? To my knowledge, there is just Draft:Corey Baker (choreographer). You can just edit it directly. If you feel that it is a well-developed article at some point, you can submit the draft for review via the large “Submit for review!” button at the top of the draft. — MarkH21 (talk) 22:33, 21 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Ah I see now that there is Draft:Corey Baker which was un-deleted recently. I’d suggest merging anything useful in that draft to Draft:Corey Baker (choreographer) (since there already exists a different Corey Baker) following the merging procedure and then developing the draft there. — MarkH21 (talk) 22:40, 21 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there Mark - yes you're right, one remains! There was a draft one which was more comprehensive but it was removed. I'll take a look at this new one as I see it is unlikely to be granted a permanent page as it stands. Appreciate your help,

Commissioner of Police (Hong Kong)

Hi Mark,

Two quick things I have an issue with regarding your latest edits:

1) When stating a full name (English and Chinese), the proper way is "Eddie Hui Ki-on", and not "Eddie Ki-on Hui". This is the standard for both journalists and government documents, including recent announcements on the appointment of Chris Tang.

2) Birthdays were taken directly from the Chinese Wikipedia site and hence should be reinstated.

Regards, CityPride (talk) 08:31, 22 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@CityPride: Regarding the name order, I see now that local sources use this name order. This seems contrary to most customs regarding people with both Chinese & English names, since the family name occurring in between both the given names is ambiguous, but the sources do support the usage here (maybe it’s a Hong Kong-specific thing?). Government sources don't seem to use the order much though, e.g. the government website lists "Tang Ping-keung, Chris". I don't see why the common name (i.e. the article title) should not be used though.
Regarding the birth dates, there always must be an attributed reliable source. If there are reliable sources from the Chinese article that you can move over then do so, but if not then it cannot be introduced here. If something is unsourced on the Chinese site, you can’t just add the unsourced claims here too. — MarkH21 (talk) 08:38, 22 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@MarkH21: It is indeed a Hong Kong specific thing, and was strange to me at first as well. But even the police website, "Tang Ping-keung, Chris", as there is a comma there, it implies that the full name (without the comma) would be listed as Chris Tang Ping-keung. An example of the name without a comma would be like the website of the Court of Final Appeal: [1]
And even in Chris Tang's newly created Wiki page (along with the pages of the other Commissioners) the name is displayed that way. Wondering if you mind I changed it back?
Regarding birthdays, agreed, will source them before I add them back. Thanks!
CityPride (talk) 08:55, 22 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@CityPride: It would be better than the currently displayed format, but I still think that the WP:COMMONNAME (i.e. the article title) would be more appropriate than the full name, as is used in other articles (e.g. the List of presidents of the United States does not list Barack Obama as "Barack Hussein Obama II"). In this case for instance, the list should just include "Stephen Lo" as opposed to "Stephen Lo Wai-chung". Even the rest of the Commissioner of Police (Hong Kong) article follows this usage with "Eddie Hui" and "Raymon Anning" instead of "Eddie Hui Ki-on" and "Raymon Harry Anning". — MarkH21 (talk) 09:35, 22 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks!

Hello,

Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at the English Wikipedia.

I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to [email protected], so we can invite you in!

From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.

If you have any questions, please let us know at [email protected].

Thank you!

Sir. Vassel Johnson - Notable Caymanians - Cayman Islands

Sir. Vassel Johnson was added to notable Caymanian list but was removed. His name needs to be added back to that list. Truth be told he is one of the most important notable Caymanian's to be on the list. Fyi yes they named one of the University Halls after him. He was Army Home Guard in Cayman during WW2 he was Financial Secretary of Cayman he was a Politician in Cayman and he was the first and only Caymanian to be knighted by H.M. Queen Elizabeth II. He helped build Cayman international recognition. I'm surprised to the fact he has not been on the notable Caymanian's list from before. ~~Scottish Caymanian~~ — Preceding unsigned comment added by Scottish Caymanian (talkcontribs) 13:42, 8 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Scottish Caymanian: A subject needs an existing article on them to be added to “Notable X” lists, whereas there is no article on Vassel Johnson.
Should you wish to create an article, be aware that the Wikipedia notability guidelines determine whether an article should exist for someone. If the subject does not clearly meet any of the guideline criteria, the article will be subject to deletion. Note that any claims to notability must be supported by clear citations to reliable sources. — MarkH21talk 17:33, 8 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for Uriyangkhadai

On 18 December 2019, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Uriyangkhadai, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Mongol general Uriyangkhadai invaded the territory of the Song dynasty in southern China by going through Tibet and Vietnam? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Uriyangkhadai. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Uriyangkhadai), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

DYK nomination of Semisimple representation

Hello! Your submission of Semisimple representation at the Did You Know nominations page has been reviewed, and some issues with it may need to be clarified. Please review the comment(s) underneath your nomination's entry and respond there as soon as possible. Thank you for contributing to Did You Know! --evrik (talk) 21:49, 18 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Article review request

I've completely revamped the article Police misconduct allegations during the 2019 Hong Kong protests. Can you please take a look at it and remove the NPOV tag if you think it's ok. Thanks. -- Ohc ¡digame! 07:55, 20 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Ohconfucius: Thanks for your work on the article! It definitely looks improved. I’ll take a more thorough look in the coming days and reconsider the tag accordingly. — MarkH21talk 12:12, 20 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Ohconfucius: Just letting you know that I haven't forgotten about this; part of the delay is that there's quite a bit to go through! As a preliminary remark, I am still finding some instances of sources being slightly misrepresented in tone or presented as matter-of-fact in WP voice. These will need to be carefully adjusted to accurately reflect the original sources’ meanings.
On a related note, I think it might be worth limiting the allegations included to those with reports by at least two separate reliable sources. Otherwise, the criteria for inclusion is weak enough for loose speculation that may detract from the more serious allegations and contribute to the wall-of-text effect. — MarkH21talk 10:22, 4 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Textbook template

Hi. I just saw your recent edits on the SU(3) Clebsch article (with which I fully agree), and further in Representation theory of the Lorentz group. The template of the latter is accurate, of course, but it can be easily misconstrued by experts who cannot stand obvious trivialities. The fact is, however, that, having sent generations of desperate students to this article, and witnessed their delight, I've come to appreciate that a bit of a simulacrum of a textbook might not be a bad thing: readers go to it more often to learn than to review what they already know.

I watched the heroic editor who put it together from some distance as he was doing it, and I think he did a good job not assuming too much. It could, and should, be improved, of course, but not at the expense of dropping introductory material that overwhelmed or unmotivated, or lazy, students do not know where else to go for. I suspect if you perused that article's statistics you might appreciate its success. So, even if the template should be salutary, maybe we should all make sure it only leads to dropping resolutely superfluous stuff. It has been the go-to tutorial for generations of students. Cuzkatzimhut (talk) 22:26, 2 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Cuzkatzimhut: Hi! I appreciate your detailed comments on this. The issue is the writing style moreso than the content of Representation theory of the Lorentz group (and some related articles). The article can retain its educational value without its prose being self-referential or first/second-person. I think that this can be fixed without any change to its usefulness to students. I might work to change the writing style to present the same facts in a third-person encyclopedic tone (so mostly superficial). That's the main aim of the template.
On the side though, I do think that some large sections of background already contained in other articles may need to be dropped (particularly in the first section "Non-technical introduction to representation theory" which really should be reserved only for survey articles, notes, and textbooks...). — MarkH21talk 05:47, 3 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Full agreement on style, but I’d argue for condensing, not dropping background... students won’t go to other articles. They welcome a survey... They are mostly QFT students. Mathematically adept readers may always skip the stuff.Cuzkatzimhut (talk) 11:08, 3 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Re article Omer Tarin

Hello MarkH21, regarding the article Omer Tarin, I am sorry but I disagree with your recent edit/removal today. I dont think it is about religion, Omer Tarin is a noted poet and a mystic /Sufi and his poetry is centered around his mystic philosophy and I think that he mentions this himself in his various texts and interviews. In addition, his Sufism is central to his work, poetic and social and inextricably linked. If it's ok, I shall re add the note or edit/rewrite ? Regards AsadUK200 (talk) 20:38, 5 January 2020 (UTC){{AsadUK200))[reply]

His notability is not from him being a Sufi, but from his Sufi-inspired poetry - this is an important distinction. Perhaps Sufi poet would be a more accurate description. As a side note, him mentioning this has little value; we should be using secondary descriptions rather than primary descriptions. — MarkH21talk 21:50, 5 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Centuries/millenia distinctions

We've already made such distinctions clear in the articles for the 21st century, the 20th century, the 2nd millennium the 3rd millennium, and so on. So I'm wondering why they were deemed unnecessary for the articles I've edited, but not the aforementioned ones. SillySympathy3 (talk) 11:49, 6 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@SillySympathy3: That's a fair point. I'm leaning towards it being unnecessary in all of those articles, but I'll start a talk page post asking for consensus first since those articles have heavier traffic. — MarkH21talk 12:00, 6 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for Semisimple representation

On 8 January 2020, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Semisimple representation, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Clebsch–Gordan coefficients, which describe how spinning objects influence each other in quantum mechanics, come from the structure of semisimple representations? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Semisimple representation. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Semisimple representation), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

"leaves too much space before sections". I don't understand that please would you explain. Thanks, Eddaido (talk) 10:07, 8 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Eddaido: Notice that there is a lot of space between the end of the table of contents and the start of the "Etymology" section in the old revision due to the three photos on the top right. I removed one of the photos so that there is no excess space. — MarkH21talk 10:25, 8 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The space you speak of does not happen for me. I wondered if you might be using a particular type of phone or something. Eddaido (talk) 10:27, 8 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I'm on Chrome on a laptop. — MarkH21talk 10:28, 8 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Eddaido: I did some responsive screen testing and it seems to happen when the resolution width is greater than around 1150 pixels. — MarkH21talk 10:31, 8 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
You've just gone too technical for me. No one else has ever complained and I'd much prefer dumping the pink monstrosity - but that's a matter of taste. Anyway, now I better understand why you did it. Eddaido (talk) 10:34, 8 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Eddaido: Feel free to swap the pictures around - I made the change purely to get rid of the extra spacing! — MarkH21talk 10:37, 8 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I'll do that. Thanks, Eddaido (talk) 10:39, 8 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
