Wikipedia:Collaboration of the week/Archive
Each week a Collaboration of the Week will be picked using this page. This is a specific topic which either has no article or a basic stub page, the aim being to have a featured-standard article by the end of the week, from widespread cooperative editing.
The project aims to fill gaps in Wikipedia, to give users a focus and to give us all something to be proud of. Anyone can nominate an article and can vote for the nominated articles. Every Sunday, the votes are tallied, and the winner will be promoted for a week to potential contributors.
Previous winners can be found at /History.
Removed nominations can be found at /Removed.
Selecting the next Collaboration of the Week
The next winner will be selected on Sunday, September 12, 18:00 (UTC).
Voting
Please vote for as many of the following candidates as you like. Please add only support votes. Opposing votes will not affect the result, as the winner is simply the one with the most support votes (see Approval voting).
Only registered users should vote.
To enter your votes, simply edit the appropriate sections by just inserting a new line with "# ~~~~". This will add your username and a time stamp in a new numbered list item.
Tie-breakers
In case of a tie, voting will be extended for 24 hours. If there is still a tie, the candidate that was nominated first wins.
Nominations
New nominations can be made at any time and should be added at the end of this page. Please use the template.
If the page you are nominating already exists, please add {{COTW}} to the top of its talk page. This expands to: Template:COTW
Considerations for nominations
- Please only nominate articles which don't currently exist or are stubs.
- For non-stubs, submitting the article to pages needing attention, cleanup, peer review, or requests for expansion may be more appropriate.
- Giving reasons as to why an article should become the COTW may assist others in casting their vote.
- Can the wider community easily contribute to the article? Or is it something only a small number of people will know about?
Pruning
For pages nominated on or after 1 September 2004, the nomination will be moved to /Removed if it has not received 5 votes after 7 days on the list, 10 votes after 14 days, 15 votes after 21 days, and so on. Previously, the pruning limit was 4 votes per week previously, and the old limit will continue to apply to pages nominated before 1 September 2004. Please see the talk page for discussion of this change in pruning policy.

- The article has been expanded rather substantially since being nominated. Not really a stub anymore, but there's still plenty more that could be added. Isomorphic 14:41, 26 Aug 2004 (UTC)
- Well the idea that a COTW article cannot win if it gets expanded after nominated seems a little strange. That leads to the idea that no editing should be done while being voted on, which is counterproductive. The simple solution is just to say they should meet the criteria when nominated, and editing during voting should be encouraged. After all the goal is great articles, not perfect policies. - Taxman 20:43, Aug 28, 2004 (UTC)
- I don't think the issue is policy, but how much work is left to be done after the article is selected as the 'COTW'. We have the same problem with the current leader, Livestock. I think the {{COTW}} should be placed on the article, rather than the oft-ignored talkpage, to increase visibility. Hopefully, those editors interested in working on a particular candidate article will vote early and the article becomes the designated COTW sooner. Please comment on the COTW talk page. -- PFHLai 21:20, 2004 Aug 28 (UTC)
- This issue has cropped up before... check out Wikipedia talk:Collaboration of the week/Archive 1#Errr. Maybe the policy should mention this? OTOH, m:instruction creep is a very bad thing. • Benc • 14:46, 29 Aug 2004 (UTC)

- This should be removed as it is clearly not a stub. Alternatively are we allowed to remove our votes as the article has been so greatly changed.- SimonP 20:50, Sep 8, 2004 (UTC)
- I nominated it, and with Mirv's excellent expansion today, this article is now clearly not a candidate for COTW. I believe there is now very little material the average editor could contribute without primary sources in hand. Due to that I have changed my position and I now support delisting here. - Taxman 21:15, Sep 8, 2004 (UTC)
- I agree it clearly is no longer a stub, but where do we draw the line? Space Race has improved quite a bit from how it was when originally nominated for instance. (This should probably go to talk!) Tom- 23:29, 8 Sep 2004 (UTC)
- Surely they should have to be a stub when nominated and any improving after nomination is encouraged. We are trying here to improve articles. LUDRAMAN | T 23:42, 8 Sep 2004 (UTC)
- Agreed. since it was a stub when nominated and it has ganed many votes, we should keep it in the running until it is disqualified for lack of support. But, I for one am removing my vote for support since other articles on this page are more deserving of COTW and this article is ready to go to Peer Review. Davodd 23:47, Sep 8, 2004 (UTC)

- It's not a subject that interests me but those that wish to work on the article can draw on mercury program, gemini program, apollo program (very extensive) - all on the US side. Then for the Russians vostok programme (less extensive, but has links to the missions), Voskhod programme and soyuz programme. List of human spaceflights chronologically can be used to tie them together I guess. Easier said than done, I know... and what's lacking there is the political and cultural view of all the activity. --[[User:Bodnotbod|bodnotbod » .....TALKQuietly)]] 17:39, Aug 20, 2004 (UTC)

- Some nice facts here, but it seems like a collection of facts here better beloning in the space exploration category or the articles on the individual programs. I think there's a good article to be written on the U.S.-Soviet competition, but this focuses more on their individual achievements than the competition itself. PedanticallySpeaking 19:30, Aug 26, 2004 (UTC)
- Agree the term Space race is all about the race to achieve technological control of space, and is still going on, as the US' publicly stated policy is to achieve "full spectrum dominance" of space and to "deny the use of space" to all others. (From the NASA website and NASA publications) we definitely should touch on the international implications of the space race.Pedant 06:21, 2004 Sep 5 (UTC)

- Should be moved to Doctor Zhivago (film). Misses the cultural references completely e.g. Zhivago = Russian for 'life' and and is merely a cast list. Completely lightweight article and needs substantially more work. Sjc 04:27, 17 Aug 2004 (UTC)

- Displaying my own interests a bit much, perhaps, but I was surprised to see that this was a red link. I may have missed some content, but surely there must be something to be said for warfare in the time of the Greeks, Persians, Madedonians, Romans, Iceni, Germans, Dacians, Parthians, Huns, Vandals. On the negative side, medieval warfare and siege were both quite recent. Renaissance warfare, early modern warfare and aerial warfare are also red, but I though this one was the most glaring omission. -- ALoan (Talk) 12:54, 11 Aug 2004 (UTC)
- Given that films about ancient warfare are back in fashion in the cinema(Troy, Alexander, etc) it should be a topic of some interest. Average Earthman 09:46, 12 Aug 2004 (UTC)
- Oh yes, here's another fun one. Think of all that could be added: the changes in tactics (phalanx, cavalry, first use of strategic reserves) and weapons, and capsule descriptions of battles (Arbela, Cannae, Salamis, Chalons) and their significance. A great time could be had by all. Antandrus 01:45, 31 Aug 2004 (UTC)

- A fascinating area. Article Genetic basis for homosexuality has already been written - there is alot to cover.
- Would be an interesting article to write with a small number of collaborators, but dozens is just begging for a revert war. Normally I'm not evasive of controversial topics, but within the context of mass collaboration, I am. :-( • Benc • 20:06, 31 Aug 2004 (UTC)
- No support under current name - topic too myopic. Articles should be Genetic basis for sexual orientation and Environmental basis for sexual orientation to be more inclusive of bisexuality, transgenderism and heterosexuality. Davodd 17:31, Sep 3, 2004 (UTC)
