A thank and a question

Thanks for the help. I will add some more information on African culture and languages - in particular Kabiyé (a Gur language of north Togo). Is there a way for one's edits in other languages to all be counted together on your contributions, or does one have to create and manage separate wiki accounts in the other languages to do so? And, also is there an official counter for user edits and contributions? Thanks for helping, JesseRafe 04:47, 18 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Responded there. --Dvyost 04:55, 18 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

The issue of vanity

I think you are exaggerating the issue of vanity in the pages related to Mikhail Lebedev. All the references are to something published in good journals. I think that participation of the experts in Wikipedia is important as opposed to non-professionals copying something from old textbooks. Deletion of references simply because there is a suspetion that vanity was a motivating factor does not seem like a good idea. Substance should be discussed and not subjective impressions about the articles' authors. --EncephalonSeven 18:44, 15 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Fair enough. I'd still like to see it doublechecked by another editor skilled in these areas, but you're right that it wasn't quite fair of me to speculate. You can see a more extensive response there. --Dvyost 18:52, 15 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Octaviano Olympio

About that article... he is said to be an "AfroBrasilian". I don't think that this term is used really. In Brazil, this would be refered as something like African descendent (not that really, but the translation is complicated). In america, there might be the term African-American (I'm not shure), but AfroBrasilian seens inadequate. Do you have any suggestions? I would change if to African descendent Brasilian, but I'm not shure if this is correct. Or maybe it's afrbrasilian actually, and I'm the one not getting it, I don't know. algumacoisaqq 19:53, 15 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Humm... sorry, I would love to help, but unfortunely, I know absolutely nothing about Olympio (well, I know now that I read your article). I just tought that the AfroBrasilian term was a bad adaptation from AfroAmerican, or something like that. However, I believe more in your source then in myself, for now. algumacoisaqq 17:33, 16 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

update of the project

Update - User:NYArtsnWords has created Wikipedia:French Collaboration Project. I invite you to edit, change, rewrite it... For now it's a draft, before the project is finalised and launched. Thank you. CG 06:54, 17 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

For god sakes THANK YOU for blocking J7! Search4LancerFile:Pennsylvania state flag.png 10:40, 18 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I feel I should point out that there has now been another complaint added to J7's talk page complaining of vandalism. Might I suggest a longer block period? Like, oh say... forever? KC. 06:41, 19 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

African Union Mission in Sudan

Take a look, African Union Mission in Sudan.

Thanks! I reworded one for a little more clarity, but other than that I think it looks great. Cheers, --68.226.154.36 03:06, 19 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

United States of Africa

The article United States of Africa needs help, I've provided external links that might help. Briaboru 07:58, 19 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Done--at least the cleanup. I'll plug in more information if I ever come across any. Cheers, --Dvyost 08:09, 19 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Stephen Gray

He gives me a beautiful butterfly, and I ignore him for weeks... Sorry 'bout that. Stephen Gray (writer) and Stephen Gray (scientist) are now in place, so if you would care to delete the existing Stephen Gray, I'll create Stephen Gray (dab). And many thanks for the wise words on UK geo articles (there's a known structure? Oh...). I'll get stuck into this lot again shortly. :-) JackyR 17:32, 19 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Gotcha covered--in this case I went ahead and just made a redirect to the dab page. Look like what you intended? Nice work on the SG (writer) article! Sometime you ought to make up a user page to show off all this good work. Cheers, --Dvyost 05:02, 20 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

About JFAS's RfC/RfA campaigning on article talk pages

Of course, we all know he's been actively soliciting other Wikipedians to pile on on their personal pages and on article talk pages. In skimming the comments above, it would appear that he has said he was going to remove such notices. However, I just happened across two of them without trying. He's either being disingenuous or sloppy. After all, if he can't keep up with his article talk-page RfA/RfC spamming from memory, it's easy enough for him to retrace his steps and fix the problem. But, clearly, he hasn't bothered. deeceevoice 09:57, 20 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Replied there. --Dvyost 16:52, 20 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Hey Dyvost -- I'm only posting this here as deeceevoice would probably delete it immediately if I put it on her page. If there are any articles that still have the RfC post on them I'd be happy to remove them (and you and everyone else have my permission to do so). We talked about it and I agreed to do this, and I was pretty sure I got them all. I'm surprised there are two remaining, and I'd be REALLY surprised if there were three. I am also pretty sure there aren't any as far as the RfAr. I informed users involved in the RfC, which I thought was the appropriate thing to do. I informed users across the spectrum -- everyone except those that had already posted to the RfAr. -Justforasecond 16:16, 22 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I'm back

Thanks for the information, im sorry about vandalising.

I don't think I ever logged on anonymously =S... I had my friend (from the IP 24.70.95.203) make some modifications to my userpage while I was blocked... his IP is similar to mine (which is 24.83.196.144) because we live in the same country.

French Collaboration Project

Biffeche

Hi, Have a look at ref 29 in [1] re the history - that looks reputable and citable to me. I doubt if there are any sources for the modern village but don't imagine that anyone would particularly want to invent that material - suggest you just delete it if you're uncomfortable with it (personally I'm prepared to take that bit on trust as it fits with the little I know about the region)? Dvyost. Thanks for the note of welcome. You correctly surmise that I have a special interest in the recent history of Southern Africa. I also have a lot of other interests and have only just discovered Wikipedia. I will try the device you suggest for signing talk page entries. All the best. Bob

Merry Christmas to ya Dvyost, thanks for the quick 101 on Wikipedia stuff, my bad I was posting the welcome pages on the wrong sites. Inic 21:55, 25 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

No problem, and a merry Christmas to you! --Dvyost 21:59, 25 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. I have a sneaking suspicion that every basically has something it calls a national library, or a de facto one at least, but at a certain point, the internet just isn't helpful for certain coutries. And there simply isn't a comprehensive source I can find. Countries like Yemen, Chad, Comoros, CAR, etc. still frustrate me. Your help is really appreciated. I've really been planning on hitting those red links too (especially if they have websites); good work on the Mali one. Dmcdevit·t 07:49, 26 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I'd assume you're right--if I ever come across a comprehensive list I'll be sure to send it your way, but for now I'll have to settle for ferreting out translations of the other French ones. =) Merry Christmas! --Dvyost 08:04, 26 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, you too. Actually, I have a question for you. You put the article for Mali's at National Library of Mali, and not Bibliothèque Nationale de Mali. Do you know if that is correct convention? I had assumed that they would be put in the original language, but some are and some aren't. Dmcdevit·t 08:21, 26 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
The governing convention is the most common English language name; I generally Google both the French and English while translating, and if I find the French coming up commonly in English-language news stories, etc., I use that, otherwise I use the English. I think it just comes down to how it's most often referred to... --Dvyost 16:08, 26 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! I'm translating some Spanish articles now... Dmcdevit·t 19:55, 26 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Backroom tamperings?

Hi there, I was just wondering if you've heard of, or could possibly find out, any tampering to my rollback capabilites. I am a non-sysop, and I've found the rollback button by Sam Hocevar to be a godsend in fighting vandalism. The script has worked well for me, without bugs or concern, for over a month now. For some rather peculiar reason, I get a "&fakeaction=rollback" rather than "&action=rollback" when attempting to rollback vandalism. If this is just on my end, I can clean it up. However, before I do such, given the fact that you are a sysop, I'd like confirmation that my recent rollback shortcomings are not' the work of an inside bureaucrat. Thanks --Jay (Reply) 22:15, 26 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Notability of books

More advice craved, oh wise one. I can't track down a policy, or even policy discussion, with regard to notability of books. There seem to be articles about absolutely un-notable books, and comments at AfD like, "It's by a real publisher, so the book should have a Wiki article".

Surely, surely, Wiki can't have an article on every "real" book? That would turn it into a catalogue. Given the comprehensiveness of Amazon and other online bookstores, it's not even useful to have Wiki do this. My own feeling is that, for a book to have an article of it's own, it should be notable as an artefact or for its influence or impact. Its usefulness or sheer enjoyability is irrelevant (of course, massive sales or becoming a cultural reference point count as impact). So I've added a redlink for The Bondswoman's Narrative, because as a novel written in the 1850s by a female slave it has importance in social history. And I'd like to delete a link to Monuments to Courage unless someone can demonstrate its significance as a phenomena in its own right.

And after all, if a book really is useful, it will live on in WP as a Reference. JackyR 00:51, 27 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Replied there. --Dvyost 16:26, 27 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
And Seasons Greetings to your fine self! (How rude of me not to have said that yesterday!) Is the 26th not called Boxing Day in the States? Never knew that... Cheers for notability refs, which I have seized upon and bookmarked, but it looks like the non-fiction issue hasn't been tackled. I s'pose my benchmark for all this is myself - some of my utterly un-notable books have sold way more than 5000 copies, and had some cute Amazon reviews, too, [2], [3] but I would be mortified if they got Wiki articles, for all that Wiki is not paper.
I'm uneasy about Monuments to Courage et al, because it's part of a project by an external website [4] to use Wiki as a host. This is clear from Wikipedia:WikiProject Victoria Cross Reference Migration. I guess Wiki is many things to many people, but this is really begging for conflicts of interest. Issue of concern, or is this just my inner control freak speaking...? Cheers, and Happy (what's left of the) Holidays! JackyR 16:28, 27 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
