Świętochłowice
Świętochłowice (pronunciation: [ˌɕvjɔ̃tɔxwɔˈviʦɛ]) is a town in south Poland with 55,500 inhabitants (2005). Situated in the Silesian Voivodship (since 1999), previously in Katowice Voivodship (1975-1998).
History
A subcamp of German concentration camp Auschwitz was opened in Świętochłowice in 1943 - Zgoda labour camp. Since January 1945, the camp was reopened and continued to be used by Communist Poland. The camp, in which about 2,500 prisoners lost their lives during 1945, was closed in November.
Location
Świętochłowice is situated in the Southern part of Silesian plateau. Świętochłowice borders with Bytom (North), Ruda Śląska (West, Southern West) and Chorzów (East, Southern East).
