East Rail is run by Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation, starting in 1911 as KCR. At the beginning, there is KCR British Section between Fanling and Sha Tau Kok, which was no longer run and replaced by Sha Tau Kok Road on April 1,1928.

In 1982, all trains were replaced with electrified trains. In 1998, due to the construction of West Rail, the system was renamed as KCR East Rail to differentiate with West Rail.

In 2004, the East Rail Ma On Shan Extension will be commenced, running between Tai Wai and Wu Kai Sha.
