Wikipedia:Collaboration of the week/Archive

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This is an old revision of this page, as edited by Tothebarricades.tk (talk | contribs) at 00:46, 17 September 2004 (Culture of Germany). The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

Each week a Collaboration of the Week will be picked using this page. This is a specific topic which either has no article or a basic stub page, the aim being to have a featured-standard article by the end of the week, from widespread cooperative editing.

The project aims to fill gaps in Wikipedia, to give users a focus and to give us all something to be proud of. Anyone can nominate an article and can vote for the nominated articles. Every Sunday, the votes are tallied, and the winner will be promoted for a week to potential contributors.

The current Collaboration of the Week is History of feminism.

Previous winners can be found at /History.
Removed nominations can be found at /Removed.

Selecting the next Collaboration of the Week

The next winner will be selected on Sunday, September 19, 18:00 (UTC).

Voting

Please vote for as many of the following candidates as you like. Please add only support votes. Opposing votes will not affect the result, as the winner is simply the one with the most support votes (see Approval voting).

Only registered users should vote.

To enter your votes, simply edit the appropriate sections by just inserting a new line with "# ~~~~". This will add your username and a time stamp in a new numbered list item.

Tie-breakers

In case of a tie, voting will be extended for 24 hours. If there is still a tie, the candidate that was nominated first wins.

Nominations

New nominations can be made at any time and should be added at the end of this page. Please use the template.

If the page you are nominating already exists, please add COTW to the top of its talk page. This expands to: Template:COTW

Considerations for nominations

  • Please only nominate articles which don't currently exist or are stubs. (Two paragraphs or less of information or fewer than 1,000 characters)
  • Giving reasons as to why an article should become the COTW may assist others in casting their vote.
  • Can the wider community easily contribute to the article? Or is it something only a small number of people will know about?

Pruning

For pages nominated on or after 1 September 2004, the nomination will be moved to /Removed if it has not received 5 votes after 7 days on the list, 10 votes after 14 days, 15 votes after 21 days, and so on. Previously, the pruning limit was 4 votes per week, and the old limit will continue to apply to pages nominated before 1 September 2004. Please see the talk page for discussion of this change in pruning policy.

Candidates for next week

Nominated July 22; needs 44 votes by October 7 (minimum 4 votes per week)

  • Practically a stub, mostly taken up by a timeline of events. Needs much more background and historical information. Tom- 17:59, 22 Jul 2004 (UTC)
  • Why are three sockpuppets involved in an AOTW vote? Ambi 07:48, 5 Aug 2004 (UTC)
  • Does a red user page imply sockpuppet? In any event, Anyone can nominate an article and can vote for the nominated articles., and it passes the pruning threshold today anyway. -- ALoan (Talk) 11:55, 5 Aug 2004 (UTC)
    • EastNile is almost definitely a sockpuppet, based on the edit history, and since when have anons been able to vote? I take back what I said about Felix Wan, however (the timing had made me somewhat suspicious). For that matter, I'm supporting this. It just makes me wonder when sockpuppets get involved. Ambi 12:40, 5 Aug 2004 (UTC)
      • P.S. I'm not a sockpuppet. : ) Astudent 05:18, 2004 Aug 13 (UTC)
    • The 9th vote submitted at 18:07, 30 Jul 2004 (UTC) by 81.156.152.186 is probably a 'sockpuppet vote'. It should not be counted. Only registered users should vote, according to the rules above. -- PFHLai 18:09, 2004 Aug 28 (UTC)
      • Note: Now and then one of us logged-in users accidentally gets logged out without our knowing...I know I've submitted edits and realized later (usually right away, but not always) I had gotten logged out. I would suggest it's very plausible that is the case here. Not that we can do anything to find out who it might have been, but I thought it might explain the mystery of sockpuppet votes here more effectively. Jwrosenzweig 14:11, 7 Sep 2004 (UTC)
        • I am hoping the registered user would return and fix his/her "spoiled" vote. -- PFHLai 09:34, 2004 Sep 8 (UTC)
  • It's just a big bulleted list! Gah. Definitely needs fixing. - Ta bu shi da yu 13:56, 12 Aug 2004 (UTC)
  • It's not a subject that interests me but those that wish to work on the article can draw on mercury program, gemini program, apollo program (very extensive) - all on the US side. Then for the Russians vostok programme (less extensive, but has links to the missions), Voskhod programme and soyuz programme. List of human spaceflights chronologically can be used to tie them together I guess. Easier said than done, I know... and what's lacking there is the political and cultural view of all the activity. --bodnotbod » .....TALKQuietly) 17:39, Aug 20, 2004 (UTC)
  • I already redid the timeline into paragraph form...now we just need research and expansion. Ilγαηερ (Tαlκ) 17:36, 23 Aug 2004 (UTC)
  • Some nice facts here, but it seems like a collection of facts here better beloning in the space exploration category or the articles on the individual programs. I think there's a good article to be written on the U.S.-Soviet competition, but this focuses more on their individual achievements than the competition itself. PedanticallySpeaking 19:30, Aug 26, 2004 (UTC)
    • Agree the term Space race is all about the race to achieve technological control of space, and is still going on, as the US' publicly stated policy is to achieve "full spectrum dominance" of space and to "deny the use of space" to all others. (From the NASA website and NASA publications) we definitely should touch on the international implications of the space race.Pedant 06:21, 2004 Sep 5 (UTC)
      • Have a direct reference for that? That would make a great addition to the article? - Taxman 04:26, Sep 9, 2004 (UTC)
  • Smithsonian and Safari Limited published a card game with space race facts and pics 91 or so. The form and depth of the captioning might give you some ideas on formatting at least a part of your article. U.S. Space and Exploration Rummy / Safari Limited / POB 630685 / Miami, Florida / 33163
  • Here's some more help from today's BBC News. Two part feature on how USSR and US divided up German expertise. --bodnotbod » .....TALKQuietly) 22:48, Sep 11, 2004 (UTC)
  • Just reorganised the article and added images used already by other articles. I know I might've waited until this gets the vote for COTW but I think it may be a bit better now. Still lots of room for expansion and definately should be COTW. violet/riga (t) 16:52, 14 Sep 2004 (UTC)

    • The state of race relations in America is such that any race-related topic must be approached with great care and sensitivity, which has probably kept some potential authors from contributing. It's a shame that the article seems ready to jump off the rails due to the impending American election. Hopefully cooler heads will prevail and this article will end up primarily addressing the NAACP and not the current American election cycle. --DV 13:42, 29 Aug 2004 (UTC)

  • Displaying my own interests a bit much, perhaps, but I was surprised to see that this was a red link. I may have missed some content, but surely there must be something to be said for warfare in the time of the Greeks, Persians, Madedonians, Romans, Iceni, Germans, Dacians, Parthians, Huns, Vandals. On the negative side, medieval warfare and siege were both quite recent. Renaissance warfare, early modern warfare and aerial warfare are also red, but I though this one was the most glaring omission. -- ALoan (Talk) 12:54, 11 Aug 2004 (UTC)
  • Given that films about ancient warfare are back in fashion in the cinema(Troy, Alexander, etc) it should be a topic of some interest. Average Earthman 09:46, 12 Aug 2004 (UTC)
  • Oh yes, here's another fun one. Think of all that could be added: the changes in tactics (phalanx, cavalry, first use of strategic reserves) and weapons, and capsule descriptions of battles (Arbela, Cannae, Salamis, Chalons) and their significance. A great time could be had by all. Antandrus 01:45, 31 Aug 2004 (UTC)

    • They're not on at the same time, the 2004 paralympics is the 17th to 28th of September. As for not being important, the BBC is showing an hour and a half of coverage per night, so at least one major broadcaster views it as being of some importance. Average Earthman 10:31, 30 Aug 2004 (UTC)
  • Let's support the under-recognised for once! -- user:zanimum
  • it hasnt even begun yet! why don't you wait until at least a couple months after it's finished to promote it? it doesn't make sense to work it up when there will be much more to add later on. --Jiang 09:52, 12 Sep 2004 (UTC)
    • Erm, today is the 12th, Jiang. The Paralympics start on the 17th, and end on the 28th. This is currently third or fourth in line, which means it's almost definitely going to end a week or two after the Paralympics conclude, which is perfect. If it had been nominated any later, it would've actually got to be COTW so late that it would be practically useless, as they would have been over so long before that all the interest would have passed. Ambi 10:29, 12 Sep 2004 (UTC)
      • People are voting on its current status. There is no guarantee or indication that no one will be interested on the article as the Paralympics are held and the article could very well be improved and not need to be the COTW to be unstubbed (not a stub at the moment and reasonable length for an article on a future event). This would be a waste. I really don't see the logic behind the claim that people will lose interest later on and therefore make this unsuitable for COTW - the point of COTW is to get people's attention. If the article already gets people's attention (like to summer olympics), when why make it the COTW? In this context, my comment really does appear to make a whole lot of sense. --Jiang 11:03, 12 Sep 2004 (UTC)

  • A fascinating area. Article Genetic basis for homosexuality has already been written - there is alot to cover.

  • Drama, its just everywhere, TV, in the street its life, and we all need it. Just a stub, needs ENLARGING. Needs defining, and needs to have the debates about education and entertainment fully represented.
  • I listed narrative structure on pages needing attention the other day, it's a disgrace! --bodnotbod » .....TALKQuietly) 01:36, Sep 9, 2004 (UTC)
  • 66.167.253.83 01:58, 10 Sep 2004 (UTC) (contributor since May 2003): The article on drama needs a lot of editorial attention. There are blocks of useful comments, but it flows poorly, its organization is not systematic, the contributions don't share a consistent style, it is overly dependent upon a separate "see also" list, and it has a number of misspellings and punctation mistakes. As a start, one of the collaborators should review everyone's contributions and refactor. In particular, write an introductory paragraph so that the reader isn't confronted at the beginning with a TOC, particularly a TOC whose first item is "The problem with the term drama"... To reduce the "see also" list, look for ways to cleanly embed those topics into your exposition; the main article is hardly wikified and resorts to parenthetical "see ______" comments in the few cases where cross-references are made.

      • This probably has something to do with the fact that there are more English-speaking Wikipedians in the U.S. than in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (an article which, incidentally, has some information that could be in this one). But this kind of comment is part of why I would be wary of touching such a potentially-sensitive article—I'm not sure that people who feel strongly about this would approve of my well-intentioned but amateurish meddling! --Aranel ("Sarah") 21:53, 12 Sep 2004 (UTC)
        • We seem to have some fairly good coverage on the Darfur conflict in Sudan (which is next to Congo), despite an expected lack of English-typing Wikipedians. I hope Congo Civil War will get something similar, or better if chosen as COTW. -- PFHLai 22:18, 2004 Sep 12 (UTC)
        • Good point. The question is why the Western media gave far more coverage to the Darfur conflict than the Congo civil war, even though the death toll in Congo is several orders of magnitutde higher. Could it be because of certain resources our economy needs? - pir 16:30, 16 Sep 2004 (UTC)
  • Shouldn't the title be Congolese Civil War, like American Civil War, English Civil War ? Deus Ex 17:45, 14 Sep 2004 (UTC)
  • The brevity of this article is a damning indictment of Wikipedia, just as the abysmal lack of coverage of the war in the West is a damning indictment of our media. And yet, when I tried to begin expansion of the article I found myself unsure of the basics and entirely ignorant of the details. A damning indictment of me then. Personally I plan to do a lot of reading about this conflict with a view to helping to plug this terrible gap in our coverage, but such a massive topic as this deserves the attention not just of a few interested contributors but of the whole community, and I urge everyone to support its nomination. — Trilobite (Talk) 19:23, 15 Sep 2004 (UTC)

  • IMO, the Cockroach page would be better off as a general article on the order Blattaria (life-cycle, etc., but keep technical stuffs brief, please.), and the role of all cockroaches as pests (to humans). If the info about specific species of cockroaches are moved to their own pages, we'll get a stub and possibly an acceptable COTW candidate. Would this be a good compromise ? • It seems to be a bit longer than a stub (just with horrible formatting that needs to die). In addition, though I'd personally find this interesting, I don't think there's that much that people are likely to be able to add without access to a seriously good library (which I don't have). Ambi 10:44, 12 Sep 2004 (UTC)
    • There are 62,200 pages on this subject on the web. I don't see how this is different from Baghdad. It's certainly shorter than Cockroach (nominated on the same day). Most of the articles here (Civil rights, Congo Civil War, Navy moving up the list) aren't stubs by the strict definition and many are longer than this article. I don't see why you're singling out Chang'an. --Jiang 11:09, 12 Sep 2004 (UTC)
      • I don't think you actually looked at those Google results, as the vast majority of them were about other things. There were a couple of sources, but not a great many. I'm not saying it wouldn't be a good topic - just that it's unsuitable for this sort of a project, as it requires resources that can't easily be obtained. Ambi 07:06, 13 Sep 2004 (UTC)
    • I don't think you can legitimately make the claim that "the vast majority of them were about other things". Even though there are a lot of tourist links, the links still refer to the city. A search with other keywords, such as "Tang dynasty" will make things easier to find. Take, for example, these links: [1], [2], [3] --Jiang 06:12, 14 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Comment: Thats a bit of an exaggeration; there is already a lot of content about Welsh politics at Politics of the United Kingdom and there are many articles about Welsh political institutions and politicians. Deus Ex 17:12, 13 Sep 2004 (UTC)

  • An article initiated by me as a stub, but has been significantly contributed to by User:69.162.34.100, has a lot of scope for enhancement -- Sundar 05:03, Sep 14, 2004 (UTC)
  • This doesn't seem to fit into the criteria specified (i.e. it should neither have more than 2 paragraphs nor more than 1000 words. But, to me those criteria themselves appear questionable. Also note that the current collaboration of the week (History of feminism) doesn't meet the criteria. If we need to go by the rule more than the spirit, then my nomination shall be deemed as withdrawn. I've already added this to the list of articles that require expansion. -- Sundar 08:29, Sep 14, 2004 (UTC)

  • I'm sorry, but is this a joke? TPK 15:17, 14 Sep 2004 (UTC) Talk
    • Just because it's a laughably pathetic joke, doesn't mean it didn't really happen, although those involved surely wish it hadn't. Still referred to in the UK media as an example of what is wrong with the minor royals Average Earthman 10:28, 16 Sep 2004 (UTC)
  • There isn't even an article on the TV show on which this is based, It's a Knockout. I think we should concentrate on an article for It's a Knockout and mention It's a Royal Knockout as one of its special episodes.
    • Okay, I agree with that, but I still think a TV show like this isn't worth COTWing, given the other topics that can/need to be covered. TPK 17:34, 14 Sep 2004 (UTC) Talk

  • Sorry to double nominate, but I think for the layman the two are hard to distinguish. Both articles are very small - particularly when you think these areas are both graduate degree courses lasting 3 years in the UK and, I'm sure, the US now. If anyone reading this is a student and knows someone on such a course, please try and recruit them to contribute. --bodnotbod » .....TALKQuietly) 18:44, Sep 14, 2004 (UTC)
