KKFR is a Rhythmic Contemporary Hit Radio outlet in the Phoenix, Arizona radio market. The station broadcast at 92.3 MHz on the FM dial with an effective radiated power of 100 kW. Its COL is Glendale, Arizona and it is owned by Emmis Communications, but will transfer ownership to Bonneville, who plans to replace the format with a simulcast of News/Talk KTAR (620 AM) after the deal closes. Its current slogan is "Where Hip Hop Lives."
History
KKFR flipped from a Country music format in 1985 to start out as a gold-based Top 40 outlet known as "THE FIRE STATION" but over the years they began shifting towards a Rhythmic/Dance music mix. They also adopted the "Power 92" moniker in 1988 and patterned their direction on [future sister station] KPWR/Los Angeles. They would later modify it to "Power 92.3" in 2000.
By 1994 they shifted to Modern rock-leaning Top 40, but it didn't sit well with its listeners and the ratings slipped, and in March 1995 they returned to a Rhythmic/Dance music direction.
By 1997 they began evolving into a R&B/Hip-Hop approach, of which they still play a lot of, but by 2004 they would once again start adding more Rhythmic Pop tracks into the current mix.
In addition to its music mix, KKFR also has a personality-driven airstaff, high profile mixers and a top-notch street team. It core listeners are teens, females, and young hispanics.
From 92.3 to 98.3
On May 8, 2006, Emmis announced that they have sold KKFR to Bonneville, who in turn announced that they flip the station to a KTAR simulcast. Two months later, on July 12, Bonneville sold the intellectual property of the Power 92.3 format to Riviera Broadcast Group, owners of KEDJ 103.9. Riviera plans on placing the format on 98.3 FM, currently KKLD, which is moving its signal closer to the Phoenix Metro area in late summer. [1]
KKFR HD2
On April 25, 2006, Emmis announced that this August KKFR's HD2 subchannel will carry a format focusing on Rhythmic Top 40 hits that will feature music in both Spanish and English and will target bilingual-speaking listeners. The format, called "Power Dos," will be patterned after KPWR's HD2 subchannel of the same name. Although this is preliminary, this may change with the new format of 92.3 FM.
