Lieutenant General Aamer Riaz HI(M) is a retired senior officer of the Pakistan Army who served from 1984 to 2019. He served as Director General Military Operations (DGMO), Commander of Southern Command, Commander of IV Corps Lahore, and President of the National Defence University.

Military career

Riaz was commissioned into the Pakistan Armoured Corps in 1984 after graduating from the Pakistan Military Academy at Kakul.

In August 2013, he was appointed as Director General Military Operations (DGMO) at the GHQ in Rawalpindi. In this role, he was responsible for overseeing the army's operational planning and coordination.[1]

In September 2015, upon his promotion to Lieutenant General, Riaz assumed command of the Southern Command in Quetta. His tenure included significant operational responsibilities in the region.[2]

In September 2017, he was appointed as Commander of the IV Corps in Lahore, succeeding Lieutenant General Sadiq Ali. He served in this capacity until December 2018.[3]

In December 2018, Riaz became President of the National Defence University in Islamabad, where he served until his retirement in September 2019.[4]

Post-retirement

After retiring from the army, Riaz took on the role of President at the Centre for Global & Strategic Studies (CGSS), a strategic think tank based in Islamabad. In this capacity, he has engaged in various academic and strategic initiatives, including collaborations with universities and research institutions.[5]

Awards

Riaz was awarded the Hilal-i-Imtiaz (Military) in recognition of his distinguished military service. This honor is among the highest awards conferred upon military officers in Pakistan.[6]
