Arllat is a village located in the municipality of Drenas in Kosovo.[2]
Demographics
[edit]According to the 2011 census, Arllat had a population of 3,134 residents.[1] The vast majority of the population identifies as ethnic Albanian, numbering 3,132 individuals. The village is also home to one Bosniak resident, while one individual's ethnicity was not recorded.[1]
History
[edit]Arllat was noted in an Ottoman defter of 1485 as a large village, consisting of 43 homes. On top of a plateau overlooking the village, there existed a Serbian Orthodox monastery purportedly built with the same materials used to build the Visoki Dečani monastery. The monastery was abandoned during the Great Migrations of the Serbs in 1690. The monastery lay abandoned until 1885 when local Albanians deconstructed the monastery and used the remnants to build a mosque in Arllat.[3]
According to refugees, buildings in this small village located on the crossroads between Pristina, Peja, and Malisheva were set on fire by Serbian forces on March 30 after some 200 ethnic Albanian men had been executed.[4]
Recent events
[edit]Occasionally, the village makes the news, such as in the case in July 2021, when a bus caught fire and was dealt with by the Kosovo Police.[5]
Notable people
[edit]Eliot Bujupi is a promising young footballer from Arllat who has gained recognition for his performances both in Kosovo and abroad. Born in the village, he represents the younger generation of Kosovan talent making strides in European football. He plays for the youth team of VfB Stuttgart in Germany and has also represented Germany at the U16 national level. Known for his skill and potential on the field, Bujupi has been praised as a rising star with a bright future and he has been acknowledged locally, including by the Mayor of Drenas, Ramiz Lladrovci, who welcomed him in an official meeting as a symbol of the success of youth from the region.[6][7] In August 2024, he was called up for the Kosovo national team[8] and made his debut shortly after.[9]
