Battalgazi, formerly and colloquially Eskimalatya (Kurdish: Melediya kevn), is a municipality and district of Malatya Province, Turkey.[2] Its area is 947 km2,[3] and its population is 307,478 (2022).[1] At the 2013 reorganisation part of the former central district of Malatya Province was added to the district.[4] It covers the eastern part of the agglomeration of Malatya and the adjacent countryside.
The town center corresponds to the previous location of Malatya proper, at a distance of 20 km from the modern day urban center and provincial seat of Malatya. The town was renamed in honor of Battal Gazi during the Republican period.
