Bubblegrunge
Bubblegrunge is a fusion microgenre that combines elements of grunge and pop music. Practitioners of the style include Soccer Mommy, Mannequin Pussy, Slow Pulp[1] and Ovlov.[2]
Characteristics
[edit]A fusion of elements of grunge and pop music, bubblegrunge is characterized by its raw sound and confessional lyrics. According to Lauren Boisvert of American Songwriter, "Bubblegrunge could primarily be called a woman’s genre, and while I hate to pigeonhole it into unnecessary gender categorization, it’s more about the style of lyrical expression than just the fact that a woman made the music."[1]
Although in use by critics in the 1990s, awareness of the term increased with its inclusion in the 2021 edition of Spotify Wrapped.[3]
