From 1964 she studied architecture at the TU Braunschweig and Technical University of Munich . After completing her studies in 1971 and a short academic career in the field of rural construction and housing, she worked as a town planner from 1972, initially in the building authority in Norderstedt , and then from 1987 as town planning officer in Kassel. From February 1992 to May 2007, Thalgott succeeded Uli Zech as town planning officer in Munich and headed the city planning authority there. From 1994 she was chairwoman of the supervisory board of the Munich Society for Urban Renewal.[1]
During her time as city planning officer in Munich, important decisions regarding urban development were made, including plans for the reconstruction of the main train station,[2] the expansion of the Mittlerer Ring with new tunnels, the reconstruction of the Schrannenhalle and the construction of the Jewish Center and the neighboring Angerhof office building with the associated redesign of St. Jakobsplatz and the surrounding streets.[citation needed]
She was also responsible for the planning of Messestadt Riem, the Theresienhöhe district, the Panzerwiese, Parkstadt Schwabing,[3] and the Fünf Höfe. During her 15-year term, she also oversaw the construction of the 142-meter-high Uptown Munich skyscraper on Georg-Brauchle-Ring.[4][5]
In addition to her work as a municipal official, Thalgott held teaching positions at the Kiel University from 1985 to 1987, and the Technical University of Munich, from 1996, which appointed her honorary professor in 2003.[citation needed]
In 2000, she joined the board of trustees of the newly founded "Lebendige Stadt" foundation, which is closely associated with the shopping center developer ECE.[6] From 2003 to 2007, Thalgott was president of the German Academy for Urban and Regional Planning (DASL) .[citation needed]
