Symbolism

[edit]
  • The egg-shaped shield is derived from the shape of a protective shield.
  • The kujang is a traditional weapon of the Sundanese people, indigenous to West Java. The five holes on the blade represent the five principles of Pancasila, the state ideology of Indonesia.
  • The rice stalk with 17 grains on the left symbolizes the main food crop of West Java, as well as agricultural fertility. The number 17 refers to the date of Indonesia's Proclamation of Independence.
  • The cotton branch with 8 flowers on the right symbolizes textile fertility, with the number 8 representing the month of the proclamation (August).
  • The black mountain range represents the mountainous nature of West Java, especially in the southern region.
  • The waves (three blue and two white) on the lower left symbolize the many rivers and waterways that are vital to agriculture in the province.
  • The 6×5 blue and white checkered field on the lower right represents the abundance of rice fields and plantations. Most people in West Java rely on fertile land for agriculture.
  • The dam in the center of the lower section, between the river and fields, symbolizes irrigation development, which is a major concern in this agrarian province. It also represents major dams in West Java, such as the Jatiluhur Dam.[2]

Colors and their meanings

[edit]

The coat of arms features several colors, each with specific meanings:

  • Green – fertility and prosperity of the land.
  • Yellow – nobility, glory, and wealth.
  • Black – resilience and eternity.
  • Blue – peace and tranquility.
  • Red – courage.
  • White – purity, holiness, and honesty.[3]

Motto

[edit]

The provincial motto is Gemah ripah, répéh rapih, a compound phrase in Sundanese language.

  • Gemah ripah means fertile, prosperous, and well-off, with sufficient food and clothing.
  • Répéh rapih means peaceful, orderly, and harmonious.

The overall meaning reflects that West Java is a rich and fertile region, inhabited by people living peacefully, harmoniously, and prosperously.[4]
