Deepshikha Shukla is a theoretical nuclear physicist. She is an Associate Vice President of Business Innovations and Professor of Physics at Rockford University in Rockford, IL, USA. Her research focuses on electromagnetic properties of nucleons, few- and many-nucleon systems, neutrino physics, electrostatics in Soft Matter. In addition to the study of theoretical physics[1][2], Shukla’s work has involved interdisciplinary scholarship and issues of diversity and inclusion in the sciences.
Education and career
[edit]Shukla obtained a B.S. degree with honors in 1995 from Cotton College; an M.S. in physics from the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi in 1997; a Ph.D. in physics from Ohio University in 2006[1], and an MBA in Leadership and Project Management at Rockford University in 2022[3].
After graduating from Ohio University, Shukla became a Postdoctoral Research Scientist at The George Washington University in 2006, a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2009, an Instructor at James Madison University in 2011, and a Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 2012[1].
In 2015, she came to Rockford University. There, she has served as the Dean of the College of Science, Math, and Nursing; the Interim Provost; Global Faculty Fellow; Professor of Physics; and Associate Vice President[4].
Shukla has served as a member of Sigma Xi, the American Physical Society, the American Association of Physics Teachers, the American Association of University Women, and Women in Physics at The George Washington University and Ohio University. Since becoming a member at Sigma Xi in 2015, she has served as the Vice President and Secretary of the Rockford University Chapter[5]. She serves on the Executive Council of the Illinois Section of the American Association of Physics teachers[6].
In addition to physics and academia, Shukla’s career has centered around the promotion of diversity, equity, and inclusion in STEM. She has organized several outreach programs, such as the Washington Park Community Center in Rockford, IL and at Rockford University, an after-school program at Carlson Elementary School, AAUW-sponsored outreach programs for middle/high school female students, and more[1]. She has co-led a partnership with Kids Around the World, established an annual STEM outreach program at Rockford University, and led the program “Tech Savvy for Girls” in collaboration with the American Association of University Women[6][3].
