AI Overview Optimization is an emerging subset of search engine optimization (SEO) focused on improving visibility within Google's AI-generated summaries, known as Search Generative Experience (SGE) or AI Overviews. These summaries, powered by large language models like Google's Gemini, synthesize information from multiple online sources to answer user queries directly within the search results page.
Unlike traditional SEO, which concentrates on ranking for keywords through backlinks and on-page elements, AI Overview Optimization emphasizes semantic relationships, entity recognition, structured data, and user intent alignment to increase the likelihood of being selected as a trusted source by AI systems.
The methodology was first introduced by Matt Maglodi, founder of the digital marketing firm Online Advantages, in a 2025 industry resource titled “How to Get Featured in Google’s AI Overviews”.
