Acamps, officially known as the Shalom Youth Camp, is an annual event organized by the Shalom Catholic Community, an International Association of the Faithful recognized by the Catholic Church. Aimed primarily at youth aged 14 and older, Acamps combines recreational activities with spiritual formation, including Masses and preachings, to evangelize participants in a dynamic way.[1] The event reflects the Shalom charism, centered on evangelization and a youthful faith experience, and is a key component of the community's Youth for Jesus Project (YJP).[2]
History
[edit]Origins
[edit]Acamps began on July 23, 1990, in Fortaleza, Ceará, Brazil, as an initiative of the Youth for Jesus Project (YJP) under the Shalom Catholic Community.[1] Conceived by youth led by Moysés Azevedo, the community's founder, it aimed to provide a vacation activity infused with Christian values, inspired by the Catholic Charismatic Renewal.[2] The inaugural event drew hundreds of participants and laid the foundation for the Shalom's youth evangelization efforts.[3]
Expansion
[edit]From the 2000s, Acamps expanded to other Brazilian cities, including Teresina, Brasília, and Recife, and by the 2010s, it gained an international presence with editions in Hungary (2018), Italy (2022), and United States (2023).[4][5] During the COVID-19 pandemic, the virtual "Acamps ON" edition in 2021 was broadcast online, adapting to global restrictions.[1] The return to in-person events in 2022 strengthened its global reach, with the Acamps Summer Festival in Europe, Acamps North in the United States, and Acamps South in Brazil’s southern region.[4][5][6]
Structure and Operation
[edit]Acamps typically lasts three to five days and is held in natural settings, encouraging interaction with nature.[2] Its program includes:
- Spiritual Moments: Daily Masses, Eucharistic adoration, and preachings by Shalom missionaries.[7]
- Recreational Activities: Team games, sports, and artistic performances.[7]
- Formation: Catechesis and workshops on Christian themes, such as holiness and family life.[7]
Attendance ranges from 300 to 1,500 participants per edition, depending on the location.[4] Some editions include social initiatives, such as blood drives in Ceará.[8] International editions, such as the Acamps Summer Festival, often feature camping, multicultural activities, and perpetual adoration, with participants encouraged to bring or rent tents.[7][9] Some events also offer dedicated activities for children and families.[7]

Impact
[edit]Acamps is recognized for its role in youth evangelization, fostering conversions and vocations, as noted by ecclesiastical sources.[2] Rooted in the Shalom Catholic Community’s charism, it aligns with the Catholic Charismatic Renewal and is a significant initiative among Brazil’s "New Communities."[14] Its international expansion, including the Acamps Summer Festival, Acamps North, and Acamps South, highlights its relevance within the global Catholic context.[4][9][5][6]
