Airbag is a rock band from Estepona, Málaga, Spain. Formed in 1998, the group gained early popularity after releasing two demo tapes and receiving support from Radio 3 DJ Juan de Pablos.

Their distinctive style is marked by adolescent-themed lyrics, referencing B movies, science fiction, martial arts, and surf culture. Musically, their influences include Los Nikis, Ramones, The Beach Boys, Los Flechazos, The Queers, and Weezer.

They also maintain a strong connection with Spanish underground cinema, contributing to soundtracks and appearing in films such as Karate a muerte en Torremolinos by Pedro Temboury and See You Later Cowabunga! by José Roberto Vila.

History

[edit]

Airbag was formed by Adolfo Díaz (vocals and guitar), Pepillo Medina (bass and backing vocals), and José Andrés Albertos (drums) after several years playing in local bands together. Their early influences range from 1950s vocal groups, surf music, the Wall of Sound of Phil Spector, and girl groups, to 1960s pop acts like The Beatles, The Who, The Hollies, and The Zombies. They also draw from garage rock, bubblegum pop, punk bands like The Clash and Buzzcocks, and pop punk groups such as The Muffs, The Queers, and Green Day.

Other inspirations include power pop bands like The Beat, The Housemartins, and The Rubinoos, as well as modern acts like Fountains of Wayne and Teenage Fanclub. From the Spanish scene, they cite Feedbacks, Los Nikis, Shock Treatment and Los Hermanos Dalton, with Ramones being their greatest influence.[1]
