Aji John (born 31 May 1979) is an Indian film director and actor known for his work in Malayalam cinema. Active since 2009, he is best known for directing the films Hotel California, Namukku Parkkan, and Nallavan, and for his acting roles in Siddy (2022), 21 Grams (2022), Ayyappanum Koshiyum (2020), Shikkari Shambhu (2018), Pokkuveyil (2016), among others.[1]

Early life and education

Aji John was born in Kollam, Kerala, India. He finished his pre-degree at St. John's College, Anchal. Subsequently, he earned an Engineering Diploma in Electronics and Avionics from the Government Polytechnic College, Neyyattinkara, Trivandrum. After developing a strong interest in visual storytelling, he transitioned into the film industry. Aji John is a NSQF Level 7 Live Action Director - Grade A, certified by the National Skill Development Corporation, Government of India.[2]

He married Sajiritha Ajijohn (Deepa Aji John) in 2004. In 2022, he settled in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, with his wife and two children.

Career

Aji John began his career as a film editor. He worked with Amrita TV, Merryland Studio, and Sree Subrahmaniam Enterprises. In 2006, he was empanelled with the film editor panel of KSFDC's Chitranjali Studio.

He served as the editor of the television series Kadamattathu Kathanar, which aired on Asianet during 2003–2004, and directed an extended version of the same story for Jaihind TV in 2008.

He made his directorial film debut with Nallavan in 2010,[3][4][5] followed by the family drama Namukku Parkkan in 2012.[6][7] His 2013 film Hotel California, a multi-narrative comedy thriller, established him as a filmmaker of note in the Malayalam industry.[8][9][10]

As an actor, he has appeared in several Malayalam films including Safe[11], 21 Grams, Neeyum Njanum, Rasam, David & Goliath, and others. On television, he played a prominent role in the serial Pokkuveyil (2016).[12]

He also planned a Bollywood film with Ajith Paul Antony, son of former Defence Minister A. K. Antony. The project was envisioned as a big-budget venture but was postponed due to technical delays and remains in development.[13] In recent years, Aji John has been involved in the production of the film Visham, which is written and directed by his wife, Deepa Ajijohn. The film is currently under production and marks a notable collaboration in Malayalam cinema.[14][15]
