Aqara is a technology company headquartered in Shenzhen, China with offices in New York, Dubai, and Seoul. Aqara designs Internet of Things products for household, commercial, industrial and healthcare use. Aqara was an early adopter of the Matter protocol.[1] to enhance their interoperability with the most widely used IoT ecosystems, like Apple Home, Amazon Alexa, Google Home, and Samsung SmartThings. Aqara products also integrate with the Zigbee[2] [3] standard due to its low-power, reliable, and secure communication over short to medium ranges, which is highly beneficial for connecting a large number of devices in a smart home[4].
History
[edit]Lumi United Technology Co. was founded in 2009 as a smart energy company. In 2014, the company rebranded itself to Aqara to better reflect its new direction in the smart home industry. The name "Aqara" is derived from two Latin words: "acutulus" (smart) and "ara" (home), symbolizing the company’s vision of creating smart, connected homes[5].
Aqara’s growth has been marked by significant milestones. In 2017, the company opened its first offline store in Shenzhen, followed by the launch of its first showroom in Guangzhou in 2021[6]. In 2018, Aqara introduced a HomeKit-compatible product series, aiming to enhance compatibility with established brands like Apple[7]. This move marked the company's shift to providing integration with major smart home platforms. Expanding its global presence, Aqara opened an Amazon store in the US in 2019[8], and soon after, entered the European market with operations on Amazon Europe in 2021[9] , where they continue to sell products today.
By 2020, Aqara products were being sold directly in Apple stores[10] across China, Hong Kong, and Macao, and in 2021, Aqara products became available for purchase through the Apple Store online in several European countries, including France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and The UK[11]
Aqara also participated in CES 2024[12] and CES 2025[13] , where it showcased its latest IoT products, reinforcing its role as a significant presence in the smart home industry.

[edit]A smart hub is a central device that connects and controls multiple smart devices in a home automation system. Aqara hubs come in various styles, including camera hubs with built-in security features or compact hubs the size of a USB stick.
Smart Home Sensors
[edit]Aqara offers a range of smart sensors designed to enhance home automation, including presence, light, temperature, humidity, motion, and vibration sensors. These devices enable precise monitoring and control of various environmental factors within a smart home. The Aqara FP2 presence sensor, in particular, was recognized as the best smart home device at CES 2023[14] for its innovative use of mmWave radar technology, allowing for more accurate human presence detection, and the Aqara Motion Sensor P1 won Top pick from The New York Times for the best smart home sensor for Alexa[15] .
Smart Home Controllers
[edit]Home controllers, such as Aqara's curtain controllers, valve controllers, and light switches, are smart devices that integrate with Aqara or third-party accounts. These controllers enable automation of various tasks, like adjusting curtains or turning off the water in case of a leak, enhancing convenience and security in a smart home setup.
Smart Cameras
[edit]Smart cameras, such as those in the Aqara Camera Hub series, often serve as hubs in addition to their surveillance functions. These cameras integrate with other smart devices, enabling users to control and automate various aspects of their home. For example, the Aqara Camera Hub G5 Pro stands out by incorporating advanced AI features like facial recognition, sound detection, and car recognition, allowing it to trigger specific actions based on the detection of familiar faces, unusual sounds, or vehicles entering the vicinity[16] .
Smart Door Locks
[edit]Smart locks provide secure, keyless entry to homes by using technologies such as Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and biometrics. These devices allow users to remotely access and monitor entry points in real-time, enhancing home security. Aqara’s G4 Video Doorbell, which offers video streaming and two-way communication, was awarded a runner-up spot in the CES 2023 smart home category for its innovation in home security[17] . The Aqara U100 Smart lock also won CNET Editors' Choice 2024 "Smart Home and Security" catagory for the U100 Smart Lock[18]
Smart Lighting
[edit]Smart light bulbs and light strips offer customizable lighting that can be controlled remotely through apps or voice commands. These devices allow users to adjust brightness, color, and schedules, creating dynamic lighting scenes tailored to different moods or activities. Integrated with home automation systems, they can also be set to activate in response to triggers, such as motion or time of day, enhancing both convenience and energy efficiency in the smart home.
Aqara Studio
[edit]Aqara Studio is a customizable IoT platform that integrates device networking, smart management, and intuitive programming for larger scale building operations. It bridges Aqara’s advanced wireless solutions with legacy automation protocols, offering scalable, reliable, and user-friendly automation for modern commercial[19] [20] , multi-family residential[21][22] , eduction[23] , healthcare, and industrial buildings[24] . With an intuitive visual logic block editor and flexible system configuration, it enables customization of lighting, HVAC, and other systems, while supporting third-party device integration and data-driven insights[25] .
Partnerships
[edit]Aqara has established strategic partnerships with major tech platforms like Apple Home[26], Samsung SmartThings[27], Google Home[28], and Amazon Alexa[29], enabling integration of Aqara’s smart home products with these ecosystems. Aqara also teamed up with LG UPlus in South Korea to offer a co-branded smart home security solution, My Home Guard. This solution, which includes advanced home security cameras and AI-enabled tracking, is designed to be user-friendly with pre-paired devices that are easy to install[30].
