Arash Groyan (born Arash Geroeian, April 16, 1981) is an Iranian painter and miniaturist based in Thailand. He is known for his contemporary interpretations of traditional Persian miniature painting, often drawing inspiration from the Shahnameh and Persian mythology. His work frequently blends Persian and Thai cultural elements, and he has exhibited internationally, including notable showings at Chulalongkorn University in Thailand and the Carrousel du Louvre in Paris.[1][2][3]
Early life and education
[edit]Groyan was born in Tehran, Iran, on April 16, 1981.[4] He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Iranian Paintings in 2005 and a Master of Arts in Communication Art.[5] In 2009, he relocated to Thailand, having initially visited as a tourist. He has stated that he found the country's peaceful atmosphere conducive to his creative process.[2][6]
Career
[edit]Groyan's artistic career is primarily centered on Persian miniature painting, a traditional style rooted in the Sassanid Empire. His paintings often feature themes from the Shahnameh, the Persian epic by Ferdowsi, including works like Rostam Choosing His Horse and Battle of Rostam and Afrasiab.[7][4]
His work is characterized by its meticulous detail and the use of traditional materials, such as gold mixed with honey and sable brushes.[2][6] While adhering to traditional techniques, Groyan incorporates contemporary elements and intercultural themes into his art. His distinct approach, which "fuses heritage and contemporary aggression in a startlingly beautiful visual language," has been noted by publications like MNATION.uk.[8] A notable example is his Persian Miniature & Muay Thai collection (2021), the idea for which emerged after Groyan visited Leyla Sandshiko's "Counter Punch" Muay Thai Art exhibition in 2020. This series combines traditional Persian miniature figures with energetic paint splatters created using Muay Thai boxing gloves, inspired by Sandshiko's techniques.[6][9][10] The scale of these works, larger than typical miniatures, also distinguishes them.[6]
Groyan has also worked in rug and carpet design, stage decoration, and cinema.[4] In 2021, he was working with Wendell Figueroa in his art gallery.[11] He collaborated with jeweler Alessio Boschi, painting miniatures onto baroque pearls from the South Sea for Boschi's "Harem's Garden" high jewelry suite.[12][13] Groyan also creates miniature paintings on freshwater baroque pearls.[14]

This exhibition interpreted the Lanna legend Pathommunmuli and was organized by Chulalongkorn's Office of Art and Culture and South Asian Studies Center, promoting Thai-Persian cultural dialogue.[1][16]
- Carrousel du Louvre, Paris: He exhibited in 2018, 2022 (in collaboration with Marie Calte), and 2023.[7]
