Ashlan Lee Chidester (born January 16, 1978) is an American author, software engineer,[1] and disability rights advocate.[2] He is the author of several technical manuals in internet infrastructure, and a hybrid work of experimental fiction titled The Brash and Plum (2025)[3] , which has received independent literary commentary.
Career
[edit]Chidester began his career as a software engineer and technical writer, publishing his first book, Java Programming, including Advanced OSPF & BGP[4] and PNNI Signaling in ATM Networks.[5] His instructional guide Discover a Data Center was selected for the Library of Congress General Collections (LCCN 2023917166).[6]
He presented on IPv4 policy and governance at the ARIN 36 Policy Development Meeting in 2015.[7]
Ashlan’s work on Ethernet technologies earned him the #2 spot on BookAuthority’s list of new Ethernet books in 2025[8] .
In 2023, he found Mega Corp Telecom, a telecommunications services provider registered in Washington State[9] a firm registered with the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC)[10] . The company provides broadband and fixed wireless services, and is listed as Vendor #24-017 in the Washington State Technology Solutions (WaTech)[11] .

Legal and advocacy work
[edit]Chidester was a plaintiff in several U.S. federal and state civil rights actions. In 2016, he filed an employment discrimination suit against Sizmek, Inc., a digital advertising company later acquired by Amazon.[13] In 2018, he filed suit against Jive Communications, citing violations under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act.[14]
In 2024, he brought a disability discrimination case against the City of Anacortes before the Washington State Office of Administrative Hearings.[15] That same year, he ran for a public office in the proposed Fidalgo Metropolitan Recreation District.[16]
Literary work
[edit]In 2025, Chidester published The Brash and Plum, a 76-page hybrid work combining poetry and speculative fiction. The book has been cataloged by the Library of Congress (LCCN 2025910513)[17] and is held in libraries internationally.[18]
It has received third-party critical commentary, including in Vocal.Media, where it was cited as an example of hybrid literary form:[19] and in a Substack essay by Emmalee Qubull discussing the “literature of reclusivity.”[20]
The poem “Slapping Krampus” from the collection was featured in a 2025 article by Cultural Daily among the year’s most notable holiday poems.[21] The book was also listed on Goodreads in a curated public list of “Experimental, Hybrid, and Genre-Defying Novels.”[22]
