Career

[edit]

Custodio began his professional path in advertising in Brazil, later establishing himself as a creative director and communication strategist for brands and institutions in the fields of architecture and design. He founded his eponymous studio in São Paulo, which later expanded with offices in Lisbon and New York.

In 2023, he created the platform Gallery, headquartered at the PCI - Creative Science Park in Aveiro, Portugal, with the mission of enhancing and internationalizing architectural discourse through films, series, events, and editorial projects.

Documentaries and productions

[edit]

Among his most recognized works is the documentary SIZA (2023), about the life and work of architect Álvaro Siza Vieira. The film was developed from over 300 hours of footage, 50 days of shooting, and approximately 40 interviews, including testimonials from Eduardo Souto de Moura, Carlos Castanheira, and members of Siza's family. It premiered at the Casa da Arquitectura in Matosinhos as part of the celebrations for Siza's 90th birthday and received coverage from national and international media, including RTP,[1] Público,[2] Forbes,[3] ArchDaily,[4] and Designboom.[5]

In 2024, he also directed the documentary about Spanish architect Fran Silvestre, as part of the Gallery Originals series. Other productions include films about the Brazilian firm Tetro Arquitetura, Italian architect Piero Lissoni, among others.

Screenings and festivals

[edit]

The documentary SIZA was screened at various international festivals, including the Budapest Architecture Film Festival (2025), where it was described as "an intimate celebration of the life and legacy of Álvaro Siza."[6] It was also featured at the Festival of Ibero-American Cultures in Stockholm, in partnership with the Instituto Camões[7], and had special showings at the São Paulo Museum of Art (MASP), in addition to being presented in events in Norway, Busan, the Venice Biennale, and Rotterdam.

Style and approach

[edit]

Augusto Custodio's work is marked by an authorial approach, focused on the human and symbolic dimension of architecture. His films propose a sensitive narrative that values the creative process, affective memory, and the social role of architecture in contemporary society. According to Designboom, his documentary on Siza reveals "the mind, the heart, and the legacy" of the architect, through poetic visual language and dense biographical content.
