BC Biermann (born January 31, 1973) is an American digital artist and academic also known as an early innovator of augmented reality street art.[1][2][3][4]
Early Life and Education
[edit]Biermann was born in St. Louis, MO and attended Parkway West High School. With a PhD from the University of Amsterdam, he has a background in academia and creative technology, having also served as a Senior Civic Media Fellow at the USC Annenberg Innovation Lab.[5]
Career
[edit]Since the early 2000's, Biermann has been creating interactive murals in cities such as Geneva, Miami, San Diego, Austin, and Perth in ways that challenge conventional design and interaction.[6] He has pioneered interactive street art murals, which combine augmented reality and digital storytelling.[7][8][9] Biermann has collaborated with other artists such as Jordan Seiler, Momo, Led Zeppelin and Nora en Pure.[10][11]
As an academic, Biermann has served as Professor of Emerging Media at UMSL and Full Professor of Design at CAVAD (CBU), where he contributed to research in media design, interactive experiences, and urban aesthetics.[12][13]
Style and Influence
[edit]Under his artist name "HVY," his work is described as analog futurism, blends hand-drawn techniques with high-end digital renderings, drawing influence from 1980s skateboard and surf graphics.[14] Biermann's work is also influenced by sacred geometry, impossible shapes, and cognitive perception. He credits Rick Rubin, Stanley Kubrick, Ralph Steadman, Neil Peart, Kim Jung Gi, and Jungian psychology as inspirations for his artistic and philosophical outlook.
Recent Work and Focus
[edit]In recent years, Biermann has shifted focus to combine street art and interior design.[15] He has also dedicated efforts towards mentorship and creative consulting, embracing a more curatorial and guiding role while serving on the board of a creative nonprofit in New York City. Biermann continues to develop new projects while supporting emerging artists and designers.[16]
Personal Life
[edit]Biermann resides in Anaheim Hills in Southern California, where he balances his creative endeavors with family life.
