Boxguy (Series)

Boxguy the Box is a fictional character created by PoyoPoyo1985 (also known as PoyoWiki1985 on Wikipedia). The character has appeared in a variety of independent media, including comics (many of which remain unreleased), ROM hacks, Pico-8 game modifications, and other unofficial fan-created content.

Boxguy made his first documented internet appearance on August 20, 2023, in a Pico-8 mod titled Boxguy in Sonic 2.5 Sage Demo, which is a modification of the Sonic 2.5 Sage Demo developed for the Pico-8 platform. Following this, Boxguy was also featured in additional Pico-8 modifications such as Celeste Arcade and Celeste 2.

Rom Hacks

The character has been incorporated into several ROM hacks of classic video games, primarily through sprite modifications. Early appearances include a hack of Super Mario Land 2 titled Boxguy and the 6 Golden Soups, in which Boxguy replaces the main character, Mario. Similar hacks include Boxguy in Super Mario Bros. 3, Boxguy in Super Mario Bros. 2, Boxguy in Gimmick!, Boxguy in Super Mario World (Hummer Team version), Boxguy in Sonic the Hedgehog (Master System & Game Gear), and Boxguy in Sonic Triple Trouble.

The first ROM hack to feature Boxguy in a more substantial role beyond sprite replacement was Boxguy Adventure, a hack of Kirby’s Adventure. This version introduced custom level graphics, adjusted background music placements, and featured eight new playable levels. According to the ROMHackPlaza page, additional levels are planned, with World 3 expected to be the final world.

Upcoming Rom Hacks

A sequel titled Boxguy Adventure 2 was announced on the creator’s YouTube channel. Based on Mega Man: Dr. Wily’s Revenge, the hack features new levels, custom graphics, and replaces the protagonist Mega Man with Boxguy. According to the announcement, the release of Boxguy Adventure 2 is planned for after the completion of World 3 in the original Boxguy Adventure.

Latest Rom Hack

The most recent release is titled Boxguy Puresabe Adventure, also referred to as Boxguy Adventure 1.5. This ROM hack modifies Puresabe’s custom version of the Japanese release of Kirby’s Adventure (Hoshi no Kirby: Yume no Izumi no Monogatari). The hack includes new levels, music, and a custom title screen that incorporates a Japanese logo using the Katakana spelling of Boxguy (ボックスガイ).
