Brenda Loew (born April 1, 1951) is an American author, poet, editor and publisher best known for her contributions to the literary world. She is the great-niece of E.M. Loew, an American businessman known for founding and operating a chain of movie theaters that bore his name. Loew was also active in the entertainment and hospitality sectors. He owned and operated the renowned Latin Quarter nightclubs in both New York City and Miami. Furthermore, he held ownership of Bay State Raceway in Foxborough, Massachusetts.
Early life and education
[edit]Brenda Loew was born in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, on April 1, 1951. She grew up in Massachusetts, earning her Bachelor of Arts in English Language and Literature in 1971 from Boston University, a Master of Arts in Linguistic Science at Brown University in 1973, and completed postgraduate coursework in speech pathology and audiology from 1980 through 1983 at Boston University.
She was awarded a Ph.D. in International Communications (honorary) from World University in 1992. In 2000, she graduated from Northeastern University’s Paralegal Studies program and the Newton Civilian Police Academy. The following year, she graduated from the Bojack Academy in Boston.
Career
[edit]Loew became a certified English and Speech Teacher in Massachusetts in the 1970s and holds additional certifications as a manicurist, in animal disaster response, as a reiki master, and in paralegal studies.
Loew established her own publishing company, Brush Hill Press, as its sole proprietor in 1982. During this time Loew wrote and published poetry, and gave live readings. In 1984, Brush Hill Press became EIDOS Magazine which published erotic art, stories about contemporary consenting adult sexuality, and alternative sexual lifestyles. It was sold in print until 1999 and attained international readership. During the 1980s, EIDOS Magazine was heavily criticized for its controversial content but the magazine prevailed and can be found online today at www.eidos.org.
Loew taught and served as a speech therapist in the Massachusetts public school system. She served as a recruiter for Newbury College in Brookline and in sales for several community newspapers. She was also a nursing home consultant in Dartmouth and a reflexology consultant in West Roxbury. Loew was also a co-producer for Newton Talk and Civic Action on NEW TV in Newton.
