Can Fugarolas is a former vehicle dealership, workshop and industrial warehouse, located in the L’Havana neighbourhood of Mataró, Catalonia. The Can Fugarolas building is composed of three floors and spanning a total property size of 9,490m². In 2013, a collective of artists and cooperatives occupied parts of the abandoned building, turning it into a self-managed social and cultural facility of the same name (Federació Can Fugarolas).
History
[edit]Responding to a perceived need for social and cultural spaces in Mataró, Can Fugarolas was founded in 2013 as a self-managed space by local artists, residents, and activists.[1] This group of collectives rehabilitated 4,500 m² of the abandoned property into a workshop for social and cultural events and projects, and sustainable repairs. Organizations such as Cronopis, Som Mobilitat, Estudio y Medio, Taller de Ideas, and Coworking were primarily responsible for launching this project. The building was retrofitted with solar panels, and equipped with a community garden and kitchen, a co-working space, circus, stages, wood workshop, and bicycle repair, for community use. On the 16th of January 2016 the Can Fugarolas project was officially registered as a federation of associations.[2]
When the building owner went bankrupt, an urban land-ownership contract (masovería) was negotiated. Through this agreement, the organization continues operating out of the building and directly invests money into the improvement of the space, rather than paying the landlord. The contract lasts until 2026.[3] In 2022, the Spanish bad bank, Sareb, acquired Can Fugarolas. Due to the urban land ownership contract, Can Fugarolas’ maintains a semi-legal status on the property, and continues to operate.
Eviction struggle
[edit]In June 2022, Sareb put the Can Fugarolas site up for sale, without notifying the tenants. In July 2022, hundreds of local residents joined the Can Fugarolas federation trying to stop the sale of the building.[4] With mediation from Mataró City Council, a moratorium period was obtained.[3]
In January 2024, private security forces attempted to evict the collectives from the building. The occupants protested the eviction, claiming to have the correct documentation and contracts to remain in the building, and were given 10 days to submit the documentation accrediting them as tenants of the space.[5] Hours after, the tenants announced they would make an offer to Sareb to purchase the space.[6] The dispute is ongoing.[7][1]
