Canopy is a parental control app designed by Netspark Ltd, an Israeli technology company that specializes in internet security solutions for smartphones and computers. The app is designed for iOS, Android, Windows, Mac and Chrome devices. Canopy provides a range of features to help keep children safe online, including web filtering, screen time management, removal prevention, sexting protection, app blocking, and real-time alerts. The app is also used by adults who wish to avoid pornographic or other objectionable content online.[1]
History
[edit]Canopy was launched in 2019 by Netspark. The app was developed in response to growing parental concern over the potential dangers facing children surfing the internet or using mobile devices.[2] Canopy employs artificial intelligence to detect nudity and pornography before it reaches the user, which differentiates it from other apps used to block inappropriate images. Using this technology, a video that is an hour long can be scanned in three seconds.[3]
Yaron Litwin, Netspark's chief marketing officer, believes that the creation of sexually explicit images of children with the help of AI is a trend that is likely to grow.[4] As a digital safety expert, he expressed reservations about new AI chatbots that claim to be child-safe.[5] He recommends keeping screen time to a “healthy minimum” and restricting the use of online devices in children's rooms and unsupervised locations.[6]While some people feel uncomfortable with parental control apps because it feels like spying or helicopter parenting, Litwin believes Canopy can help to create greater openness and initiate a conversation about these topics.[7]
Through partnerships with Israel’s Ministry of Education, Canopy technology is now used in a majority of Israeli schools.[8]
The Canopy app, which won the National Parenting Center’s Seal of Approval in 2023, can be used to cover up to ten devices.[9]
Technology
[edit]Designed for smartphones and computers, Canopy protects against inappropriate content via a filter which uses AI algorithms to eliminate objectionable content, replacing it with white rectangles.[10] Canopy detects pornographic material with a high degree of accuracy, providing parents with a dashboard app to control settings [11] and a child app which installs the filter on the target device. It differs from other platforms in that the focus is prevention.[12]The AI technology that identifies the objectionable material does not store this information.[13]
Canopy keeps children from being exposed to online pornography by filtering websites and blocking access to harmful content.[14]
The app allows parents to set screen time limits for their children's devices and monitor usage, cultivating healthier digital habits. Rules can be established for device downtime, for example, dinnertime or bedtime.[15]
Parents can block specific apps or restrict access to certain content on those apps, such as unexpected sources of nudity and inappropriate videos. For example, the youngster can browse Sports Illustrated but pictures of swimsuit models will be blocked out.[16]In other words, the app is capable of blocking pictures and videos within websites without blocking the sites in their entirety.[15]
Parents receive real-time notifications about their child's online activity, including attempts to access blocked content, which creates an opportunity to start conversations on the subject of social media.[17]
Canopy has an anti-tampering feature to prevent the app from being uninstalled without permission.[15]It can alert parents to sexting, including “sextortion,” the use of nude images of children to extort money or photos. Children may be forced to comply by threats to inform their parents.[18] The app addresses the issue by blocking inappropriate images and preventing children from sending such images taken with their camera phone.[19]
Awards and recognition
[edit]In 2021, Canopy won the National Center on Sexual Exploitation’s Technology Solutions Award. It was rated among the leading parental control apps of 2025 and cited as “best for blocking explicit content.”[20]
