Choi San (최산; born July 10, 1999), known mononymously as San, is a South Korean singer, dancer, model, and actor. He is the lead vocalist and main dancer of the boy group ATEEZ, formed by KQ Entertainment. San has participated in solo activities, including music releases, dance performances, acting, choreography, and fashion-related appearances.
Early life and education
[edit]Choi San was born on July 10, 1999, in Jinju, South Gyeongsang Province, South Korea.[1]. He was raised in Namhae[2]. He attended Namhae Middle School and graduated from the Korean Arts High School[2]. San was introduced to KQ Entertainment by trot singer Na Sang Do, who recommended him for an audition with the company[2][3].
Career
[edit]Pre debut and MIXNINE
[edit]San trained as part of KQ Entertainment’s trainee group, "KQ Fellaz". In 2017, he appeared in the reality competition MIXNINE but did not advance to the final lineup[4].
Debut and activities with ATEEZ
[edit]San debuted with ATEEZ on October 24, 2018, as the group’s lead dancer and lead vocalist. Following rapid artistic growth, the members agreed to name him the main dancer in recognition of his enhanced dance and performance skills, as shared in an interview with Korea Dispatch.[5]
San has contributed to ATEEZ’s discography and choreography. He co-wrote the song "It's You" with bandmates Wooyoung and Yeosang[6], and contributed choreography for the title track "Work"[7].
San's performance in the music show stage for "Hala Hala" attracted attention for its intensity. According to bandmate Hongjoong, a particular close-up shot of San during the performance became widely circulated and contributed to the group’s early visibility.[8]. Stone Music Entertainment referred to San as "the man who will upgrade the standard of K-pop performance" noting his power when dancing, while being able to emphasize small movements[9].
Solo projects
[edit]San’s song "Snowflake" is an original track that highlights his vocal abilities[10][11]. He has performed covers of "Breathe" originally by Lee Hi[12] and "Dear Name" originally by IU, which he performed as a duet with bandmate Jongho[13]. His solo dance performance, "Warriors", which he co-developed and co-choreographed, received praise for its technical precision and choreography.[14][15][16]
In August 2021, San collaborated with Pentatonix on a remix of their song “A Little Space,” alongside fellow ATEEZ members Yunho and Jongho. The project combined elements of K-pop and Western a cappella music.[17][18].
San appeared in the web series "Imitation" with bandmates Seonghwa, Yunho, and Jongho; this marked his first acting role.[19]. He also appeared in the music talk show Lee Mujin Service where he delivered live vocal performances[20], and made his solo talk show debut on the show Naraesik, hosted by Park Na-Rae[3].
Additionally, San collaborated with the brand Returnity to promote their acupressure ear sticker products.[21][22].
Fashion
[edit]San has participated in events such as Milan Fashion Week and Dolce & Gabbana’s Alta Moda shows. According to reports, his appearances contributed to an Earned Media Value estimated at approximately US $2 million for the Spring/Summer 2025 event,[23] and US $7.5 million for the Fall/Winter 2025 [24] Milan events. Fashion publications have noted his stylistic approach, describing it as a blend of classical tailoring and modern elements.[25][26].
Philanthropy
[edit]San has supported local welfare initiatives in his hometown, Namhae Village, including donations and participation in community events such as the Namhae Spring Walk[27].
In March 2023, he donated ₩5 million, the maximum amount allowed, to his hometown of Namhae through the Hometown Love Donation Program. The local government indicated that the funds were intended for regional development and youth welfare projects.[28]
In 2024, San made a second donation of ₩5 million through the same program. In recognition of his contribution, he received Hanwoo beef sets valued at ₩1.5 million from the local government, which he subsequently donated to 22 single-parent households in Namhae.[29]
Awards and recognition
[edit]In 2024, San received the “Best K-pop Icon” award at the Elle Style Awards 2024, recognizing his contributions to music, performance, and fashion.[30]. His cross-industry popularity was noted on the show Naraesik[3].
Public image

He has appeared on the Korean Business Research Institute’s male celebrity brand reputation rankings, which measure online searches and engagement. He ranked within the top 30 in March[31], April[32] and May 2025[33] as well as in July 2023.[34] Additionally, he has placed within the top 40 to 100 on multiple occasions[35][36]. In the combined male and female idol brand reputation lists, San ranked within the top 80 in January[37], February[38] and April 2025[39], and has appeared in the top 90 in several other months[33][40].
Personal life
[edit]San’s given name means “mountain” in Korean. His father is involved in disability-support sports in Namhae[2]. San has expressed his appreciation for poetry collections, which he discussed during his appearance on the show Minju Cabinet[41]. On the show Naraesik with Park Na-Rae, he shared that he enjoys spending his days off alone, often visiting places like Lotte World and watching movies by himself, valuing time for personal reflection[42]
