Cowboy X are an Irish electro-rock band from Dublin, known for blending guitar-driven indie rock with electronic beats and synth textures. Formed in 2004, the band received coverage in national media and performed at major Irish music festivals. After a hiatus beginning in 2010, Cowboy X returned in 2025 with reissues and new material.

History

[edit]

Cowboy X was formed by John Hanley (drums and electronics), David Grealy (guitar), and Karen McCartney (vocals and guitar). Initially a cross-border collaboration between Portugal and Ireland, the project expanded with live performances and studio work. Wayne Gibson joined on bass for live shows.

Their debut album, Who Are These People? (2006), received reviews from several Irish publications. Kevin Courtney of *The Irish Times* described the album as "an interesting, infectious electro-rock sound that's as ripped as Garbage, as sinisterly seductive as Black Box Recorder and as supercool as St Etienne."[1] Nadine O'Regan in the *Sunday Business Post* referred to them as "fierce and stylish."[2]

The single "Gabbi" charted at No. 39 in Ireland, despite being available only in Tower Records.[3] The band built an early fanbase through Myspace and played showcases including Hard Working Class Heroes (2006) and Electric Picnic (2008). They also supported international acts such as Metric and OMD.

In 2024, Cowboy X were featured in *Goo Magazine* by RTÉ DJ Dan Hegarty, who noted their return from hiatus and highlighted the re-release of tracks such as "Analogue Droids," "Break Me," and a previously unreleased song, "SIC."[4]

Style and Reception

[edit]

Cowboy X’s music combines elements of indie rock and synth-based electronic music. Their sound has been compared to artists like Garbage and LCD Soundsystem. Critics have described their production as layered and melodic, with strong female vocals and rhythmic synth hooks.

  • Hot Press* magazine reviewed their debut album positively, calling it "smart, stylish" and noting the band's polished sound.[5] Tom Dunne of Newstalk 106 included Cowboy X on his *Expert's Choice* compilation, describing them as "potent contenders... great hooks, a great voice."[6]
