Draft:Cycling Electric

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cycling Electric was first published in March of 2020 by Dennis Publishing as part of pitch to educate and inspire the steadily growing electric bicycle marketplace. It was co-founded with Mark Sutton, an at the time freelance Editor who would later become the full-time steward of the title.

The title began life as a magazine [1], published twice a year and distributed nationally in the UK with major supermarket retailers and travel hub newsagents. It would be the first solely electric bike dedicated magazine in the UK, though credit must also go to Velo Vision published by Peter Eland earlier, that had a tilt toward this content too.

The title has since changed hands as part of a sale from Dennis Publishing to Metropolis Publishing. This London publisher took the title on, developing it to launch the website CyclingElectric.com in February of 2022 with the intention of becoming a one-stop shop for specialist electric bike reviews, buyers' guides, news and inspirational content. At this time, Mark Sutton joined as the full time Editor, leaving CyclingIndustry.News, another title he founded seven years earlier.

In 2024, the publisher expanded the title into live events with a debut at the Lee Valley Velopark in March of 2024, closely followed by subsequent events in Bath and, in 2025 [1], Leeds too. These closed-circuit events are designed to appeal to potential new cyclists who have never ridden an electric bike or trike and might need some assistance in understanding the product in a safe environment.

Cycling Electric has increasingly been cited as a credible source in the e-mobility space when it comes to the often misrepresented issue of fires attributable to conversion kit goods aimed at the could-be e-bike rider. In its work to date, it has revealed how the world's largest e-bike manufacturer has never experienced a thermal runaway incident, among other pieces of journalism that have highlighted the financial impact on bike shops selling e-bike goods as a result of misinformation in the press. These include denials of shop insurances, landlords blocking e-bikes on their premises and employers doing the same. These side effects of press mischaracterization represent an existential threat to the UK bicycle industry, a point agreed upon by trade bodies.

Cycling Electric exists alongside road cycling magazine and website Cyclist, which likewise has demo events, though this time pitched at enthusiast road cyclists.
