History

[edit]

Prior to its commission, GMA Butuan started operations in 1986 on Channel 9 (DXBN-TV, now affiliated by the People's Television Network until 2011) as an affiliate station of Butuan City Fil-Products, the first television station in Caraga. At launch, Channel 9's own variation of GMA Radio-Television Arts ident aside from sporting a light blue square logo with the network name in white, also had a circle 9 logo in use, in its final years the blue circle 9 logo used was similar to those used by the ABC is some United States cities and later used the rainbow colors of red, yellow, green and blue stripes.

On April 30, 1992, Channel 9 was launched as the Rainbow Satellite Network as part of GMA's expansion of coverage, which started its nationwide satellite broadcast to bring live broadcasts of national and foreign programming from the network's flagship TV station in Manila, DZBB-TV to viewers in the Caraga region. With that, GMA utilizes a new logo to correspond with the rebranding and a satellite-beaming rainbow in a multicolored striped based on the traditional scheme of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet, with GMA in a metallic form uses a San Serif Futura Extra Bold and analogous gloominess of Indigo as its fonts in the letters. By 1995, it later transferred to the newly-established Channel 7 when the network entered an affiliation deal with Northern Mindanao Broadcasting System, continuing as a live satellite feed from DZBB-TV Manila with a TPO of 1 kilowatt plus local advertisements.[2]

On September 4, 2015, GMA Network commissioned a 5-kilowatt analog UHF relay station in the city. Its relay TV station allowing to broadcast programs emanating from GMA Northern Mindanao station (which is based in Cagayan de Oro) and freely received by viewers on UHF Channel 26, bringing the total number of its transmitting stations nationwide to 52.

On August 28, 2017, GMA Butuan re-upgrading into a semi-satellite station of GMA TV-5 Davao together with its first ever Mindanao-wide newscast One Mindanao as part of the new development, following the newly-relaunch of the network's Regional TV division; which then expanding its local programmings influence to the Southern Mindanao and later to Northern Mindanao and Caraga.
