This is just the company telling the world about itself, ie. purely promotional, whereas we need to see what independent and reliable secondary sources have said about the business and what makes it worthy of note. DoubleGrazing (talk) 09:30, 27 March 2025 (UTC)

About

[edit]

Digital Wallet Group is a global AI and fintech company founded by CEO Eiji Miyakawa and a team of former cloud designers and engineers of Sony Corporation[1]. Headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, the company offers high-tech B2C and B2B services: international mobile remittance, mobile app development, and cloud/mobile CRM.

It operates a B2C international money transfer service known as Smiles Mobile Remittance. Smiles became the first mobile application to receive the Good Design Award 2021,[2] and it is now Japan’s largest ATM network, with over 77 thousand locations. [3]

In addition to a branch office in Nagano, Japan, the company expanded its satellite offices to eight locations: Singapore, Canada, the United States, the Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam, Nepal, and the EU.

History

[edit]

Digital Wallet was founded in November 2014 by Chairman and CEO Eiji Miyakawa with a mission to help unite and sustain the globe utilizing AI and fintech. As a former employee of Sony Corporation, Eiji Miyakawa assembled a team of experts from Sony who specialized in designing and developing cloud services to start the company[1].

In June 2017, Digital Wallet’s subsidiary, Digital Wallet Corporation, launched Smiles Mobile Remittance. Overseas Filipino workers (OFW) and Vietnamese immigrants began to send money overseas with Smiles as pioneer customers, submitting feedback to improve the service.

Eventually, in early 2021, Digital Wallet opened satellite offices in the Philippines and Vietnam.

On 31 August 2021, Digital Wallet announced its acquisition of RediMoney Express Pte Ltd, formerly owned by Asia United Bank (AUB). [4]

In October 2021, Smiles Mobile Remittance received the Good Design Award 2021.[2]

On 14 February 2022, Digital Wallet entered the Canadian market and introduced Smiles Mobile Remittance.[5]

In May 2022, Digital Wallet launched Smiles Mobile Remittance in Singapore, transitioning from the acquisition of RediMoney Express[3]. In addition to offering its application, Smiles opened a physical location for face-to-face transactions and customer support called “Smiles Studio” at Lucky Plaza. [6]

On 20 March 2023, Digital Wallet partnered with Lawson Bank to allow Smiles Mobile Remittance customers to fund their e-wallets, known as Smiles Wallet, and directly send money overseas via any Lawson Bank ATM in Japan[7]. In addition to all Japan Post (Yucho) Bank and AEON Bank ATMs initially accessible to Smiles customers, Lawson Bank’s collaboration allowed Digital Wallet to offer over 50 thousand ATM locations in Japan.

In August 2023, a second corporate bond of 1.1 billion JPY was issued by Digital Wallet through Mizuho Bank.[8]

In February 2024, Digital Wallet reached an agreement with Seven Bank, a Japanese bank run by Seven & i Holdings Co Ltd, operating Seven-Eleven stores in Japan, to acquire its subsidiary and international money transfer service, Seven Global Remit[3]. This made Smiles Mobile Remittance Japan’s largest ATM network with over 77 thousand locations nationwide.

Smiles Mobile Remittance (B2C)

[edit]

Launched in June 2017, Smiles Mobile Remittance was designed and developed by Digital Wallet to provide a mobile money transfer service for immigrants to support their loved ones and contribute to their home countries. Initially, it allowed them to send money overseas only from Japan, but now, they can send money from Singapore and Canada.

Smiles Mobile Remittance received the Good Design Award 2021.[2]

Users first need to deposit money in their “Smiles Wallet,” which is used to send money overseas anytime to over one million cash pickup locations in over 200 countries.

Customers can deposit in multiple ways: QR code, Smiles Card or online bank transfer. The QR code method allows customers to deposit cash at any Seven Bank ATM, which will be reflected in the Smiles Wallet account in minutes. Via the Smiles Card, customers will be required to order it for free. Once they receive it, they can start depositing/remitting at certain ATMs, depending on the card type. Once they receive the card, they can use it to deposit money at any Japan Post (Yucho) Bank ATM, AEON Bank ATM, or Lawson Bank ATM. Lastly, customers who deposit via online bank transfer can make a wire transfer from their personal bank account.

On the receiving end, beneficiaries can either receive money from a Smiles remitter via cash pickup or directly through their bank account.
