FUQA is a Japanese garage rock band based in Tokyo, formed in 2024 by three artists originally from Osaka. The band is known for its stripped-down, high-energy sound influenced by classic rock from the 1960s to 1980s. Their minimalist setup—vocals/guitar and drums—has drawn frequent comparisons to The White Stripes.

History

[edit]

The members of FUQA—Ryo (vocals and guitar), Mei (drums), and Marie (visual design)—met in Osaka while students and began collaborating creatively. The three later relocated to Tokyo, where they officially launched the band in early 2024. Ryo and Mei compose and perform the band’s music, while Marie is responsible for its visual identity and stage aesthetics. The band quickly gained traction within the city’s underground rock scene.

Musical style and influences

[edit]

FUQA’s style is rooted in garage rock, with raw, energetic performances and minimal instrumentation. Their influences include Iggy Pop, Deep Purple, and other rock acts from the 60s to 80s. The band’s dynamic and gender-balanced duo format has led to comparisons with The White Stripes.
