Florian Eugster (born 1984) is a Swiss academic specializing in auditing, financial accounting, and corporate valuation. He serves as an Associate Professor of Auditing and Director of the Institute of Accounting, Control and Auditing (ACA-HSG) at the University of St. Gallen (HSG). He is also affiliated with the Swiss Finance Institute.
Early Life and Education
[edit]Eugster was born in 1984 and raised in Wädenswil, Switzerland. He completed his secondary education at MNG Rämibühl in Zürich. He pursued studies in economics at the University of Zurich, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Banking and Finance, followed by a Master of Arts in Business Administration, both with summa cum laude honors. He obtained his Ph.D. in Finance from the same institution in 2013. During his doctoral studies, he was a visiting scholar at the Rotman School of Management, University of Toronto, supported by a Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) Fellowship.
Academic Career
[edit]From 2014 to 2021, Eugster was affiliated with the Stockholm School of Economics (SSE), where he served as an Assistant Professor and later as an Associate Professor of Accounting, achieving tenure in March 2021. In 2021, he returned to Switzerland to assume his current roles at the University of St. Gallen.
At HSG, Eugster leads the Competence Center for Auditing, focusing on internal and external auditing, accounting, and valuation. He teaches courses across bachelor's, master's, and doctoral programs, covering topics such as auditing theory, financial statement analysis, and empirical research methods.
Research and Publications
[edit]Eugster's research interests include auditing, financial accounting, valuation, and corporate governance. His work has been published in peer-reviewed journals, including the European Accounting Review, Contemporary Accounting Research, and the Journal of Business Finance & Accounting. He serves on the editorial board of the European Accounting Review.
Professional Engagements
[edit]Beyond academia, Eugster contributes to professional organizations. He is a member of the Swiss Federal Supervisory Commission for Occupational Pensions (OAK BV), where he provides expertise on financial oversight. He also lectures at ExpertSuisse in Zürich, participating in the training of certified auditors.
