Gavin Edwards (musician)

[edit]

Gavin Edwards (born 6 May 1978) is a South African singer-songwriter and musician. He is best known as the current lead vocalist and guitarist of the rock band Prime Circle, which he officially joined in January 2024.[1] Prior to joining Prime Circle, Edwards gained national prominence as the runner-up on the first season of The Voice South Africa in 2016.[2]

Early life

[edit]

Edwards was born in Durban, South Africa. His upbringing involved frequent relocations due to his father's military career, including time spent in Potchefstroom, Virginia (United States), Tzaneen, and Pretoria. His mother, a singer, kept various instruments in the house, fostering Edwards’ interest in music from a young age.

Early bands and move to Ireland

[edit]

Edwards began his music career as the lead vocalist for the band Allegory. He later joined the band Franklin, which relocated to Ireland in 2002. While in Ireland, Franklin performed at several prominent venues, including supporting Incubus at the Point Depot in Dublin.[3]

Solo career

[edit]

In October 2007, Edwards left Franklin to pursue a solo project. He collaborated with producers and songwriters, including David Schuler, with whom he co-wrote tracks for Schuler’s band, The Sunstreaks. Edwards also performed live for Brian McFadden on shows like Australia's Got Talent and Sunrise, and shared the stage with Enrique Iglesias at the Childline concert in Dublin.[4]

His band, *The Sunshine State*, signed a record deal with Village Roadshow in Australia and released a single in 2011. The track was featured on Dancing With The Stars (Australian TV series)|Dancing With The Stars and reached No. 88 on the Australian iTunes Chart.[5][6]

Edwards later returned to South Africa and entered the first season of X-Factor South Africa in 2014, reaching the Top 7.[7]

The Voice South Africa

[edit]

In 2016, Edwards rose to national prominence as the runner-up on the first season of The Voice South Africa.[2] His blind audition performance of "Say Something" garnered over 10 million views.[8]

Following the show, Edwards signed with Universal Music South Africa[9] and released his debut album, *Silver Skies*.[10] The first single, "Sparks," debuted at No. 1 on iTunes South Africa.[11] He was invited twice by SA Rugby to perform the national anthem, as well as "Ireland's Call," at major rugby events.[12]

  • Silver Skies* produced five singles. The album was nominated for a South African Music Award (SAMA) in 2017 for Best Adult Contemporary Album.[13]

Since then, Edwards has continued performing at corporate events, festivals, charity shows, churches, and pageants.

Prime Circle

[edit]

In December 2023, it was announced that Ross Learmonth would be leaving Prime Circle. Edwards was officially introduced as the band’s new frontman in January 2024.[1] His arrival marked a new chapter for the group. In early 2024, Prime Circle released the single "Better Days", featuring Edwards on vocals.[14] The track was part of the band’s album *The World We Know*, released in November 2024.[1]

Personal life

[edit]

Edwards is a practicing Christian and often credits his faith as a guiding influence in his life and career. He has spoken publicly about overcoming addiction to alcohol and drugs, and views his faith as central to his recovery.[15]

He is active on social media, sharing regular updates about his personal life and musical journey.
