Hinterland Studio Inc. is an independent video game developer founded in 2012 by Raphael van Lierop[1] in British Columbia, Canada. The company specializes in survival-themed video games and is best known for its title, The Long Dark.[2]
History
[edit]After working as game director on Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine at Relic Entertainment, Raphael van Lierop founded Hinterland Studio to pursue more personal projects aligned with his creative vision and values. The company was established with a team of experienced AAA developers, with the aim of creating thoughtful, narrative-driven games.
The founding team included industry veterans such as Alan Lawrance (Volition Inc.), Hokyo Lim (League of Legends), David Chan (BioWare), and Marianna Krawczyk (God of War series).[3]
Organization
[edit]Hinterland Studio follows a distributed work model, with some employees working at the company's main studio in Vancouver, while others operate remotely from across North America. Internal communication and project management are supported through digital tools such as Slack, Skype, and Basecamp.[4]
They has publicly expressed opposition to the widespread industry practice of “crunch”—extended periods of overtime during game development—emphasizing the importance of work-life balance and sustainable production. This stance has been noted in broader industry discussions around ethical development practices and employee well-being.[5]
Games
[edit]- The Long Dark[6] is a survival video game that has received widespread acclaim from both critics and players. Wired magazine once referred to it as "the pinnacle of the entire genre."[7] The game offers two distinct experiences: the award-winning open-ended Survival Mode and the narrative-driven WINTERMUTE Story Mode. In 2017, Raphael van Lierop[8], the game’s creator, CEO, and creative director, announced plans to formally separate these two modes as individual gameplay paths.[9][10]
- The Long Dark: Survival Mode[11], First released via Steam Early Access in October 2014, The Long Dark: Survival Mode is a sandbox-style game focused entirely on survival mechanics, with no predefined story. Over the years, it has undergone extensive development, receiving numerous major updates that significantly expanded its scope. In this mode, players are dropped into the harsh Canadian wilderness and must manage hunger, cold, fatigue, and wildlife threats. There is no final objective; the game challenges players to survive as long as possible in a world where eventual death is inevitable.
- The Long Dark: WINTERMUTE[12], The episodic story mode, titled WINTERMUTE, was launched in August 2017. It follows bush pilot Will Mackenzie and Dr. Astrid Greenwood, who become separated after a mysterious light phenomenon causes their plane to crash in the remote regions of Northern Canada. As they struggle to reunite, players explore the region of Great Bear Island, where a global geomagnetic disaster has rendered all electronics inoperative. The narrative centers on survival amidst extreme cold, dangerous wildlife, and societal collapse, with the remote town of Perseverance Mills playing a key role in the unfolding mystery.
- The Long Dark: Tales from the Far Territory[13], Released in December 2022, Tales from the Far Territory is the first paid expansion for The Long Dark’s Survival Mode. This downloadable content (DLC) introduces new regions, gameplay systems, and short, self-contained narrative missions called “Tales.” The expansion deepens the game’s world-building and expands the playable area of Great Bear Island.
- BLACKFROST: The Long Dark 2[14], A sequel titled BLACKFROST: The Long Dark II has been announced for early access release in 2026[15]. Set one year after the original game’s Aurora Event, the story unfolds in and around the fictional town of Harmont. Players will experience the ongoing consequences of the “Quiet Apocalypse,” choosing either solo play or cooperative multiplayer as they attempt to survive in a newly expanded wilderness filled with emerging threats.
