Inception in Black is a synth-based electronic music duo formed in 2020. The group consists of Serbian composer and vocalist Marina Vešić (performing as Black Marine) and British producer Morgan King. In a 2022 interview, the duo described their interest in minimal electronic structure, ambient soundscapes, and darker aesthetic elements as key influences on their work.[1]
Background
[edit]Vešić and King first collaborated in Vienna in early 2020 following a live experimental concert.[1] They subsequently began releasing music under the name Inception in Black.
Vešić holds a master’s degree in composition and has worked across multiple genres including opera, installation art, and film soundtracks.[2] She won the International Competition of Young Composers in Belgrade in 1997.[3]
King began his music career in 1979 as the drummer for the post-punk band Illustration. The group contributed the track "Tidal Flow" to the 1981 compilation *Some Bizzare Album*, which also included early recordings by Soft Cell, Depeche Mode, and The The. A 2024 retrospective in *Eats, Drinks & Leaves* noted the track as one of the compilation’s “standout synth-infused cuts.”[4] King later worked as a producer and songwriter for Clubland, winning a Grammy Award as part of the project.[5]
Career
[edit]The duo released their first single, "Big Brush," in October 2022.[6] In 2023, they released several digital singles including "Voyeur," "Ich Suche Dich," and "Figure of Speech." These tracks were later compiled on the Paradox EP, issued by VUZ Records.[7]
The *Voyeur EP* was reviewed by *Side-Line Magazine*, which noted its minimal synth foundation and described it as “a masterful extension” of their sound.[8]
In 2023, the group was included in the lineup for the German electronic music festival *Live am See*.[9]
