Inhibitor Phase is a 2021 science fiction novel written by Welsh author Alastair Reynolds. It takes place in the Revelation Space universe and is a standalone sequel to Redemption Ark, as Reynolds intended for readers to be able to read the novel as a standalone work.
Setting
[edit]Inhibitor Phase takes place in the twenty-eighth and twenty-ninth centuries in the Milky Way galaxy.
Plot Summary
[edit]Miguel de Ruyter leads a group of a few thousand human survivors hiding from a genocidal race of machines known as Inhibitors or Wolves under the surface of a planetary body named Michaelmas in an unnamed star system. A passenger ship arrives in the star system, and de Ruyter volunteers to lead a mission to destroy the arriving ship to stop it from attracting the Inhibitors. De Ruyter destroys the ship, but rescues a woman in a Suspended animation pod from the wreckage.
The rescued woman, named Glass, is able to remotely hack into the computer systems of the colony and do things like open airlocks and disable defense weaponry. She gives de Ruyter an ultimatum: he must leave the system with her in her ship Scythe, and she will leave the colony alone. De Ruyter reluctantly agrees to leave with her, leaving behind his wife and stepdaughter.
Glass and De Ruyter travel to Epsilon Eridani. De Ruyter wakes from hibernation to find Glass missing from the ship. De Ruyter ventures outside the ship to find that it is parked inside the wreck of the Nostalgia for Infinity. De Ruyter rescues Glass, who had been held captive by the Nostalgia for Infinity's captain, whose consciousness had taken over the ship in the previous books in the series.
Glass and De Ruyter meet with another group of survivors including Lady Arek and Pinky, who served as main characters in Absolution Gap under the names Aura and Scorpio. They rescue a group of uplifted pigs from the ruins of Chasm City on Yellowstone, retrieving a set of Gideon stones, an alien technology that can make ships more resilient to damage.
