Jerome XL (born Jerome Levy, 1980) is a Dutch rapper, record producer, and radio personality from Almere, Netherlands. He was born in Tegelen and moved to Almere when he was eight years old. Jerome became well-known in Dutch hip-hop during the 2000s. He is now mainly active as a radio host.[1]

Jerome is best known for his successful duo with MC DRT (2001-2006) and his work with the legendary Dutch rap crew De Onderhonden. He also formed Digibombers with Osdorp Posse's Def-P. Jerome worked with many famous American hip-hop artists including Chali 2na from Jurassic 5, Craig G from the Juice Crew, and Wordsworth.[2][circular reference][3][circular reference]

Since 2020, Jerome has focused mainly on radio work. He co-hosts the hip-hop radio show "Hou Het Zout" with MC Drieman. This show became so popular that it grew into HHZ Radio, a 24/7 hip-hop radio station that started in 2024.[4]

Early career

[edit]

Jerome started his music career in 2001. His first recording was on "Gooisch Goud," a compilation album made by producer Teasebeats. This album was only released at a party and never sold in stores.[5]

Jerome formed a duo with MC DRT in the early 2000s. They represented Dutch hip-hop on the "RapStyle" compilation albums. These albums were made by Polish rapper Gorski as part of the Universal Zulu Nation Poland chapter. The RapStyle albums were released in over 14 countries, giving Jerome his first international exposure.

Success with MC DRT

[edit]

Jerome XL and DRT became popular in 2003 with their video "Hip Hop heeft een wond." This was their first video to be shown on national TV. The video reached number 16 on The Box charts in its first week.[6]

In 2005, the duo released their album "Koeck Op!" The single "Zoveel Woorden" from this album also became a hit. Its video reached number 23 on The Box charts.[7]

The duo split up in 2006. After this, Jerome focused more on his solo work and international collaborations.

Solo career

[edit]

Recording in New York

[edit]

In autumn 2006, Jerome traveled to New York to work on his solo album. There he recorded "The Power of Speech" with Craig G, a legendary rapper from the Juice Crew. This collaboration was later mentioned in the academic book "Hip Hop in America: A Regional Guide."[8]

"De Laatste Dag" album

[edit]

Jerome's solo album "De Laatste Dag" was released in 2010 by DJAX Records. This was special because DJAX Records reopened just to sign Jerome XL. After releasing his album, they closed again for new artists. This made Jerome the only new artist they signed after stopping Dutch rap releases in the early 2000s.[9]

The album featured many international artists. These included Chali 2na, Craig G, Wordsworth, Looptroop Rockers, and Rakaa Iriscience from Dilated Peoples. The album's single "Terug naar de Boombap" became very successful in 2009. It reached number 2 on TMF Nederland's hip-hop charts and stayed in high rotation for 15 weeks.

Work with Osdorp Posse

[edit]

Jerome played an important role in Osdorp Posse's farewell album "2 Decennia" (2008). He produced six new tracks and made five remixes for the album. Jerome also appeared as a rapper on the album. In 2009, he joined Osdorp Posse on their farewell tour.[10]

Later music projects

[edit]

In 2011, Jerome formed Digibombers with Def-P from Osdorp Posse. They released the album "Laad Je Cutscene" in 2013.[11][circular reference]

Jerome released the single "Ik begin net" in 2015.[12] Since then, he has slowed down his music releases significantly.

Current work: 3xXL and radio

[edit]

Jerome now works mainly as a radio host. In 2019, he formed 3xXL with MC Drieman. MC Drieman used to be called Roodbaard and was in the group Ouderkerk Kaffers, who were also signed to DJAX Records in the 1990s.[13]

3xXL has released a few tracks, including "Blah!" (2019) and "Zeg Ja!" (2020). However, Jerome's main focus is now on radio work.

Radio career

[edit]

Since 2020, Jerome co-hosts "Hou Het Zout" with MC Drieman. This is a hip-hop radio show that focuses on true school hip-hop music. New episodes come out every three weeks. The show became very popular among hip-hop fans in the Netherlands.

In 2024, "Hou Het Zout" grew into HHZ Radio. This is a 24/7 hip-hop radio station that plays only authentic hip-hop music. The station has an official radio license (81098346) and operates from the website houhetzout.nl. HHZ Radio plays no commercial hip-hop, only underground and classic tracks.[4]

Jerome's radio work has made him an important voice in Dutch hip-hop culture. Through HHZ Radio, he helps promote authentic hip-hop and supports underground artists.
