K. Scott Griffith is an American socio-technical physicist, high reliability consultant, speaker, author, and former airline executive recognized for his contributions to risk management and safety in high-consequence industries. He is known for developing the Aviation Safety Action Program (ASAP).[1][2][3] which has been widely implemented across the U.S. aviation industry and is considered a best practice for proactive safety management.[4] He is currently the CEO of SG Collaborative Solutions, LLC, and a fellow at the Belmont Collaborative for Health Systems Innovation.

Early life and education

[edit]

Griffith earned a Bachelor of Arts in English and Physics from Texas Christian University, followed by a Master of Science in Physics from Texas A&M University. He worked as a physicist and simulator test pilot to develop lidar systems and strategic microburst avoidance and recovery procedures.[5] His master’s thesis, "Simulated Performance of an Airborne Lidar Wind Shear Detection System," was funded by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

Career

[edit]

During his career as an international airline captain and chief safety officer at American Airlines, he developed and implemented the Aviation Safety Action Program (ASAP) to prevent aircraft accidents and incidents. ASAP provides incentives for voluntary reporting of safety issues and events through collaboration between the FAA, airline and air charter operators, and labor associations.[6] The program has contributed to a 95% reduction in the U.S. airline fatal accident rate.[7][8]

In 2013, Griffith founded SG Collaborative Solutions, LLC and developed the Collaborative High Reliability® and Collaborative Just Culture® standards for organizational improvement.[9][10][11]

Publications

[edit]

In 2023, Griffith published The Leader’s Guide to Managing Risk: A Proven Method to Build Resilience and Reliability, offering insights into risk management and organizational resilience.[12]

"We Need a New Scientific Standard for High Reliability," Chief Healthcare Executive, January 14, 2024[13]

"After Cruise Ban, What’s Next for Autonomous Vehicles?," Built-In, November 09, 2023[14]

Awards and recognition

[edit]

Griffith’s contributions have been recognized with several awards, including:

  • Admiral Luis de Florez Award from the Flight Safety Foundation for outstanding contributions to aviation safety.[15]
  • FAA’s Good Friend Award, received three times at the air carrier, regional, and national levels.[16]
  • California Patient Safety Action Coalition Leadership Award for his work in healthcare safety.[17]
